Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail of Blood

By Wednesday afternoon, Marcus Vance’s forensic accounting team had struck gold.
They executed a court-sanctioned emergency search warrant on Teresa’s rental residence and Mason’s luxury apartment in downtown Nashville. What they recovered inside Mason’s safe went far beyond mere financial theft—it revealed a systematic, calculated plot that had been planned months before baby Frederick was even born.
Marcus called Connor into his office for an urgent briefing.
"Connor, you need to brace yourself for this," Marcus said, laying out a series of black leather notebooks and printouts of encrypted text messages between Teresa, Mason, and Aunt Betsy.
Connor sat down, his knuckles whitening on the armrests. "What did you find?"
"This wasn't just about stealing money, Connor," Marcus said grimly. "This was a coordinated effort to legally eliminate Amy from your life and strip you of every asset you owned."
Marcus pushed a printed text exchange across the table.
Teresa (3 months ago): "Once the baby is born, we need to make sure Amy looks completely incompetent. I'll tell Connor she's suffering from severe postpartum depression and refusing to care for the house. If she looks crazy, Connor will give me full medical power of attorney over the baby."
Mason: "What about the house deed? We need his signature before the bank audit in November."
Teresa: "Don't worry about Connor. He works sixteen hours a day. He signs whatever financial papers I put in front of him along with his dinner receipts. Once I get the house in my name, we'll kick Amy back to her trailer park and hire a nanny using Connor's salary."
Betsy: "Make sure she does all the house cleaning in the meantime. Why pay a maid when we have her?"
Connor sat completely motionless as he read the text messages. The air in his lungs felt like cold ash. The woman who had given him life had spent months treating his wife like a slave, plotting to declare her insane, and preparing to steal his child.
"There's more," Marcus added softly. "We found a life insurance policy taken out on you six weeks ago, Connor."
Connor looked up sharply. "A life insurance policy?"
"A two-million-dollar term life policy," Marcus said, handing over the document. "Signed with your forged signature, naming Bradley Dynasty Enterprises—Mason and Teresa’s shell company—as the primary beneficiary. Had anything happened to you on that dangerous construction site, your wife and child would have gotten zero. Teresa and Mason would have pocketed two million dollars."
A cold, lethal calm washed over Connor. The anger that had been burning inside him morphed into something far more dangerous: absolute, unyielding focus.
"Is this enough for federal charges?" Connor asked, his voice steady as iron.

"This is mail fraud, wire fraud, identity theft, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and bank fraud," Marcus declared firmly. "I’ve already forwarded these files to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee. The federal prosecutors are taking over the case. Teresa and Mason aren't just facing state jail time anymore, Connor. They're looking at federal prison."
"Good," Connor said, standing up and buttoning his coat. "Let them see how well my mother rules a federal holding facility."
