Chapter 8 - The Severed Ties

Outside the federal courthouse, the bright afternoon sun illuminated the stone steps.
As Connor and Amy walked down toward their truck, Aunt Betsy and Uncle Raymond rushed forward from the crowd, looking desperate, humbled, and exhausted.
"Connor! Wait! Please!" Aunt Betsy called out, her voice cracking.
Connor stopped, placing a protective arm around Amy as he faced his aunt and uncle.
"What do you want, Betsy?" Connor asked calmly.
Aunt Betsy’s eyes were brimming with tears of shame. "Connor... ten years... your mother will be seventy-eight when she gets out! She won't survive prison! Please... can't your lawyer speak to the judge? Can't you ask for leniency?"
Uncle Raymond stepped forward, holding his hands out in a pleading gesture. "We were wrong, Connor. We were all wrong. We let your mother convince us that Amy was taking you away from us. We were foolish. The bank seized our savings to pay for the restitution fines... we've lost everything."
Connor looked at his aunt and uncle—the people who had sat in his home, eating his food, while his wife was treated like a servant.
"You didn't care when my wife was collapsing on her knees," Connor said, his voice quiet, steady, and unyielding. "You didn't care when my son was burning with a fever while you drank wine on my patio. You only care now because the bill for your cruelty finally arrived."
"Connor, we're your family!" Betsy sobbed.
"No," Connor replied firmly. "You were my relatives. Family is built on love, respect, and protection. You showed none of those things. My mother made her choices, and now she will live with the consequences."
Amy stepped forward beside Connor, looking Betsy directly in the eyes with a calm, unbreakable dignity.
"You told me I had to earn my place in this family, Aunt Betsy," Amy said softly. "I earned my place by loving my husband and protecting my son. You destroyed yours by choosing greed over humanity."
Betsy stood frozen, unable to find a single word to speak.

Connor took Amy’s hand, interlocking his fingers with hers. "Never contact us again. If any member of this family comes near my home or my son, my security team will have you arrested instantly."
Without waiting for a reply, Connor and Amy turned and walked down the courthouse steps together, leaving the broken remnants of the Bradley clan standing in the cold shadows behind them.
