Chapter 6 - The Reclamation

With Teresa and Mason locked securely behind bars facing federal charges, Connor turned his full energy toward rebuilding his home and healing his family.
The first step was purging the house of every single trace of Teresa’s toxic presence.
On Friday morning, Connor hired a professional biohazard cleaning crew and a high-end interior design team. Together with Amy, they walked through the house, room by room.
Every piece of furniture that Teresa had purchased using stolen money was loaded into a moving truck and turned over to the federal asset forfeiture officers to be auctioned off to repay the credit union. The expensive seafood plates, the champagne glasses, the silk curtains Teresa had installed—everything was stripped away until the house was completely bare.
"What do you want to do with the backyard, Amy?" Connor asked, standing on the back patio where Aunt Betsy had sat eating lobster while Amy slaved in the kitchen.
Amy walked out onto the green grass, holding baby Frederick, who was now fully recovered, his cheeks rosy and bright as he giggled at a butterfly.
Amy looked at the patio, then up at the clear Tennessee sky.
"I want to tear down this concrete patio," Amy said, her voice filled with newfound strength. "I want to build a garden. A place where Frederick can play in the dirt, where we can plant flowers, and where nobody ever makes anyone feel small."
Connor smiled, pulling his wife and son into his arms. "Consider it done."
Over the next two weeks, Connor took time off work to personally manage the renovation. Using his engineering skills, he designed a custom wooden deck, built a magnificent play set for Frederick, and installed a vibrant flower garden surrounding a stone fire pit.
Inside the house, they repainted the walls in warm, welcoming tones of soft cream and warm oak. They bought comfortable, cozy furniture that reflected their style, not the arrogant luxury Teresa had tried to impose.
Every evening, after a long day of hammering and painting, Connor, Amy, and Frederick sat together on their new wooden deck, watching the sunset over the Nashville hills.
The suffocating cloud of anxiety that had hung over Amy for months completely evaporated. Her smile returned, her skin regained its healthy color, and her laugh filled the home once again.
One evening, while resting her head on Connor’s shoulder, Amy looked at her husband with deep tenderness.

"You gave me my home back, Connor," she whispered.
"No, Amy," Connor replied softly, kissing her forehead. "You made this a home. I just built the walls."
