Chapter 5 - THE CONFRONTATION

When I opened the front door, the smell of fresh coffee and cinnamon filled the entryway.

Daniel was in the kitchen. He had cleaned the entire ground floor. The dishes were washed, the counters were scrubbed, and a fresh bouquet of white lilies—my favorite flowers—sat on the dining table alongside a bakery box.

He turned around when he heard the door close. He looked exhausted, his eyes bloodshot, wearing an apron over his jeans.

"Emma," he said, stepping forward tentatively, holding his hands out in a placating gesture. "You're back. I made breakfast. Please, sit down. Let's talk like adults."

I didn't take off my coat. I didn't step toward the table.

I stood in the kitchen doorway, reaching into my bag, and pulled out the paper receipt printout from Walgreens.

I dropped it onto the clean granite island.

Daniel looked down at the paper. His eyes scanned the text: Clearblue Test. Saline Solution. Positive Proof Novelty Kit.

The color left his face so fast it was like someone had opened a valve and drained the blood right out of his body.

"What is this, Daniel?" I asked. My voice was deadly quiet.

He opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow breaths.

"I went to the clinic first," I told him, stepping closer to the island. "My blood work is clean. I am not pregnant. Then I went to Walgreens. Care to explain why you bought synthetic pregnancy hormone powder on Tuesday afternoon at 6:45 PM?"

Daniel backed up against the kitchen counter, his hands gripping the edge of the sink behind him. "Emma... I... I can explain—"

"Stop lying!" I screamed, slamming my hand onto the marble island. The loud CRACK echoed through the house. "Stop lying to me! You didn't take my urine! You didn't find a test! You faked it! You bought a prop kit and created a fake positive test in our bathroom!"

Daniel sank onto a kitchen barstool, burying his face in his hands. He began to shake, letting out a terrible, choked sob.

"Why?!" I demanded, tears of pure fury burning my eyes. "Why would you do that to me?! Why would you tell your mother I was pregnant when you knew I wasn't?!"

"Because she was going to cut me out!" Daniel broke down, weeping hysterically into his palms. "She was going to take away my inheritance!"

I blinked, completely caught off guard. "What?"

Daniel lifted his head, his face wet with tears, looking pathetic and small. "My grandfather's trust fund," he choked out. "The family real estate trust. It reopens every ten years for reallocation among the grand-children. The deadline for the new trust distribution was this Friday—yesterday."

I stared at him, unable to comprehend the sheer madness of what he was saying.

"Grandfather’s will had a clause," Daniel confessed, his voice trembling. "Married grandchildren with children get a fifty-percent larger share of the trust distribution to secure the next generation's future. My cousin Mark just had twins last month. My sister Maya has two kids. They were going to get three million dollars each from the trust fund pool. And because we didn't have kids... my mother told me on Monday that my share was being reduced to fifty thousand dollars."

I stood there in complete, stunned silence.

"Fifty thousand dollars?" I whispered.

"I needed that money, Emma!" Daniel cried, standing up, reaching out his hands toward me. "My startup—my software firm—we lost our lead investor last month! We are six hundred thousand dollars in debt! If I didn't get my full share of the trust this week, the company was going to go under! I was going to be bankrupt!"

The pieces finally fell into place. The picture was complete, horrific, and sickening.

"So you lied," I said slowly, the words tasting like poison on my tongue. "You faked a pregnancy test. You showed it to your mother so she would file the trust paperwork declaring an impending heir before the Friday deadline."

"I was going to tell her you had a miscarriage next month!" Daniel wept, stepping toward me. "I swore to God I was! I just needed the trust documents signed by the executors on Thursday! I was going to pretend it was a tragic loss in a few weeks, and no one would ever know! But my mom got so excited... she announced it at dinner before I could stop her!"

I looked at my husband of six years.

I didn't see the man I fell in love with at university. I didn't see the gentle partner who held my hand when my father died.

I saw a cowardly, desperate fraud who had used my body, my reputation, and my marriage as a collateral pawn in a multi-million-dollar scam against his own family.

"You used me," I whispered.

"Emma, please!" Daniel fell to his knees on the kitchen tile, grabbing the hem of my coat. "I did it for us! For our future! I was trying to save our life!"

"Don't touch me," I said quietly.

I kicked my leg back, pulling my coat from his grip.

May you like

"Emma, where are you going?!" he sobbed from the floor.

"I am going to call your mother," I said, pulling my phone from my pocket. "And then I am calling a divorce lawyer."
