Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING AT THE FIRM

The next two weeks passed in a surreal, numb haze.

I retained a top-tier divorce attorney, a formidable woman named Clara Vance. Clara didn't mess around. Within forty-eight hours, she had drafted a legal separation agreement, served Daniel with divorce papers, and placed an emergency freezing order on our joint financial accounts to prevent Daniel from draining our savings to pay off his company's debts.

Meanwhile, the fallout from the dinner party rippled through the entire Brooks family like a tidal wave.

Patricia, overcome with guilt and terrified of a public scandal, called the trust executors herself. She quietly withdrew Daniel’s amended allocation form, claiming there had been a "medical misunderstanding," ensuring that Daniel received only his original non-parent share.

Without the extra trust money, Daniel’s software firm collapsed within ten days. His co-founders resigned, his creditors moved in, and he was forced to file for corporate bankruptcy.

I stayed in our townhouse alone, focusing every ounce of my remaining energy on my work at the design firm.

It was a Thursday afternoon when my boss, Marcus, called me into his corner office.

"Emma, take a seat," Marcus said, smiling warmly as he pointed to the leather chairs across from his desk.

I sat down, my hands folded neatly in my lap. "Is everything okay with the Westside project, Marcus?"

"Better than okay," Marcus said, leaning back. "The clients approved your architectural layouts without a single revision. It's the biggest contract this firm has landed all year."

He pulled a formal folder from his drawer and slid it across the desk to me.

"The board met this morning, Emma. We've decided to officially name you Senior Partner starting next month."

I stared at the paper.

Senior Partner.

The promotion I had worked sixteen-hour days for over the last four years. The milestone I had feared I would lose if I took time off. The goal Daniel had assumed I would sacrifice my integrity to protect.

A soft, genuine laugh escaped my lips. Tears filled my eyes, but for the first time in weeks, they were tears of triumph.

"Thank you, Marcus," I said, my voice strong and clear. "You have no idea how much this means to me."

"You earned it, Emma," Marcus said firmly. "You worked for it, you sacrificed for it, and you did it all on your own merit."

As I walked out of his office holding the promotion letter, I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city skyline below.

I had lost a husband who turned out to be a hollow liar. But I had kept my dignity, my career, my truth, and my freedom.
