Chapter 9 - CLEAN SWEEP

Six months after that fateful Friday night dinner, the divorce was finalized.

I stood in the hallway of the probate court building alongside my attorney, Clara Vance. Clara handed me the stamped, signed final decree of dissolution of marriage.

"Thank you, Clara," I said, hugging the folder against my chest. "For everything."

As I walked down the marble steps of the courthouse into the bright afternoon sunlight, my phone buzzed in my coat pocket.

It was a text from an unknown number. But I knew the digits by heart.

Now, reading those words, I felt only a quiet, peaceful closure.

I didn't reply. I didn't save the number.
