Chapter 5 - THE SCHOOLHOUSE LINE

The blue lights of two police cruisers flashed against the brick facade of Oakridge Elementary School. Parents dropping off afternoon supplies stood near the curb, whispering and pointing as I slammed my car door shut and tore across the parking lot toward the main entrance.
Inside the glass foyer, the atmosphere was tense.
Barbara stood near the security desk, wearing her expensive fur-trimmed coat, her voice shrill and echoing off the linoleum floors.
"I am her biological grandmother!" Barbara was shouting at the principal, Mrs. Vance. "You have no right to keep me from my granddaughter! Her father is emotionally unstable! He’s having a breakdown!"
Standing beside the principal was Officer Davis, the school’s resource officer, his hands resting calmly on his duty belt.
"Ma'am, for the fifth time, you are not listed on the child's approved pickup card," Officer Davis said sternly. "You need to step outside the building immediately."
"Ellie!" Barbara suddenly yelled, looking past the officer toward the inner hallway. "Ellie, come here! Tell them who I am!"
I looked down the hall. Ellie was standing behind her third-grade teacher, holding a drawing pad against her chest, her small body trembling violently. Her hazel eyes were wide with terror.
That was the last straw.
"Get away from my daughter!" I roared, bursting through the front doors.
Barbara turned, her eyes flashing with triumphant malice. "Ah, Derek! Finally! Tell this incompetent principal that I have every right to see my granddaughter!"
I didn't even look at Barbara. I walked straight past her, dropped to my knees in front of Ellie, and gathered her into my arms.
"I'm here, sweetie," I whispered, holding her head against my chest. "You're safe. I'm right here."
"Daddy," Ellie sobbed into my jacket. "She told the office lady that you were going to jail and that she was taking me to live with her."
A cold, lethal silence settled over my soul. I kissed the top of Ellie's head, handed her over to her teacher, Mrs. Vance, and turned around.
Maya Chen stepped through the front door right behind me, pulling a blue legal envelope from her portfolio.
"Barbara Miller," Maya declared, her voice echoing in the hallway. "You are hereby served with an Emergency Temporary Restraining Order issued by the County Superior Court. You are required to maintain a distance of at least five hundred feet from Derek Miller, Eleanor Miller, their residence, and Oakridge Elementary School."
Barbara scoffed, waving her hand dismissively. "That piece of paper means nothing! I have grandfathers' rights!"
"You have no rights here, ma'am," Officer Davis interrupted, stepping firmly between Barbara and my family. "You have been formally trespassed from school grounds. If you do not leave within ten seconds, I will arrest you for criminal trespass and disturbing the peace."
"Derek!" Barbara screamed as Officer Davis grabbed her elbow and began escorting her toward the double doors. "You are destroying this family! Leah is cursing you from heaven! You hear me? She is cursing you!"
"Leah loved us, Barbara," I said, standing tall beside Maya, holding Ellie’s hand tightly in mine. "And she saw right through you. Goodbye."
As Officer Davis pushed Barbara out into the rain, the entire office seemed to breathe a collective sigh of relief. Ellie looked up at me, her small hand squeezing mine.

"Is she gone for good, Dad?" Ellie asked softly.
"She’s gone, Ellie," I said, lifting her into my arms and kissing her cheek. "She’s never coming back."
