Chapter 9 - LEAH’S GARDEN

Six months later, on the second anniversary of Leah’s passing, Ellie and I stood in the center of our backyard.

Over the past two months, with the help of Tom, Jennifer, and Maya, we had transformed the unused corner of our yard into a magnificent stone reading garden.

We had built raised wooden flower beds filled with white hydrangeas, purple lavender, and pink climbing roses—Leah’s absolute favorite flowers. In the center stood a hand-carved stone bench inscribed with a simple phrase from Leah’s final letter:

Live a life filled with joy.

Maya Chen arrived at 2:00 PM, wearing a comfortable sundress, carrying a small wooden box wrapped in a yellow ribbon.

"Happy anniversary, Derek," Maya said softly, giving me a warm, genuine hug before crouching down beside Ellie. "I brought something special for the garden, Ellie."

Ellie opened the box to find a beautiful, hand-painted wind chime made of sea glass and brass.

"When the wind blows," Maya explained, "it makes the sweetest music. Your mom loved sea glass."

"Thank you, Maya!" Ellie beamed, hugging the attorney tightly before running over to hang the chime from the branch above the stone bench.

As the sea glass caught the sunlight, creating dancing rainbows across the flowers, Maya stepped beside me, resting her hands on the wooden garden fence.

"How are you holding up, Derek?" she asked gently.

"For the first time in two years, I feel complete, Maya," I said, looking at my daughter laughing under the flower trellis. "I used to think honoring Leah meant holding onto the pain and carrying her mother's burdens. But now I know that honoring her means building a life where Ellie grows up knowing she is cherished."

Maya looked at me, a soft, affectionate light in her eyes. Over the months of legal battles and family healing, our relationship had grown far beyond that of a lawyer and a client. She had become a anchor for our family—a brilliant, compassionate woman who had fought for our freedom with unwavering dedication.

"You've done an incredible job, Derek," Maya whispered, reaching out to gently squeeze my hand. "Leah would be so proud of the man and father you are."

I didn't let go of her hand. I squeezed it back, feeling a warm, bright spark of hope for the future ignition in my chest.

"Stay for dinner tonight, Maya," I said, smiling down at her. "Ellie’s making her favorite homemade pizza."

Maya smiled, her eyes shining with warmth. "I’d love that."
