Chapter 7 - THE RECOVERY OF ELM STREET

With Tom finally awake and standing alongside us, Barbara’s house of cards collapsed with terrifying speed.
Within forty-eight hours, Tom hired a high-powered family law attorney who immediately filed an emergency freeze on the ten-thousand-dollar cash advance, locking the funds before Barbara could transfer them out of her account.
Concurrently, Maya Chen delivered the Nevada trust documents to the state Department of Revenue and the Internal Revenue Service.
On Friday morning, two state tax auditors accompanied by local sheriff deputies arrived at Barbara’s stone-front home on Elm Street. They served her with a formal Notice of Asset Seizure and an immediate audit summons regarding three years of unreported income and fraudulent state benefit applications.
I drove past the house that afternoon on my way to pick up Ellie from her after-school art class.
Barbara was standing on her front porch, shouting hysterically at a state auditor who was placing an official legal seizure notice on her front door. The blue sedan I had paid for was parked in the driveway, being hooked up to a tow truck hired by my vehicle recovery team after she failed to transfer the title or return the keys.
She looked small, frantic, and utterly powerless—a tyrant stripped of her illusions.
When she spotted my SUV stopping briefly at the red light near her corner, she sprinted toward the curb, waving her arms wildly.
"Derek!" she shrieked, her voice cracking. "Derek, stop! Tell them! Tell them it was a gift! Tell them Leah wanted me to have the money!"
I rolled down my window just two inches.
"Leah left a letter, Barbara," I called out over the sound of the tow truck engine. "And the whole world has read it now. You're on your own."
I rolled the window back up and drove away as the light turned green, watching in my rearview mirror as the tow truck pulled her car out of the driveway, leaving her standing alone on the curb surrounded by state auditors.
That evening, Tom met Jennifer at a quiet coffee shop downtown. He brought the full legal files, a written apology, and proof that he had completely severed all financial and personal ties with his mother.
When Jennifer saw the Nevada trust documents and realized Tom had joined my legal team to prosecute Barbara for fraud, she broke down and held him.

"You came back," Jennifer whispered, resting her head against his chest.
"I came back for our family," Tom said, tears in his eyes. "Derek saved me. Leah saved all of us."
