Chapter 4 - The In-Law War

Word of Marianne’s arrest spread through Daniel’s extended family like wildfire, sparking a vicious social war.

Marianne came from a wealthy, old-money family in Columbus. Her two older brothers, Arthur and Richard, owned a successful real estate firm and immediately hired a high-priced criminal defense attorney named Marcus Sterling to get their sister out on bail.

On Thursday morning, while Noah was finally being discharged from the hospital, Arthur and Richard intercepted us in the hospital parking garage.

Arthur, a tall man in a navy suit with silver hair, stepped into our path as Daniel loaded Noah’s car seat into the back of our SUV.

"Daniel," Arthur said, his tone authoritative and condescending. "We need to talk."

I immediately stepped between Arthur and the car, my eyes blazing. "Get away from us, Arthur."

"Keep out of this, Emily," Richard, the younger brother, snapped. "This is a Carter family matter. Daniel, your mother is sitting in a cold cell because you let your wife file hysterical police reports over a simple mistake!"

Daniel turned around slowly. The timid, mother-pleasing son they had known was gone. In his eyes was the fierce, protective glare of a father whose child had almost been killed.

"A simple mistake?" Daniel said, his voice dangerously quiet. "She crushed a sleeping pill into my six-month-old son's milk, Uncle Arthur. He was in the ICU for three days."

"She was trying to help!" Arthur argued, waving his hand dismissively. "She’s an old woman! She got confused with her vitamins! Marcus Sterling is going to prove in court that it was an accidental cross-contamination. But if you don't drop your civil cooperation with the prosecutor, you are dead to this family, Daniel. We will cut you out of the family trust entirely."

I let out a short, cold laugh. "The family trust? You think Daniel cares about your bloody money when his mother almost murdered our child?!"

"You're the one who caused all of this, you ungrateful little girl!" Richard shouted, taking an aggressive step toward me. "You’ve been turning Daniel against his mother since the day you got married!"

Daniel didn't hesitate. He stepped forward and shoved Richard back against their luxury sedan with enough force to dent the door.

"If you or Arthur ever step within fifty feet of my wife or my son again," Daniel growled into Richard's face, "I won't call the police. I will handle you myself. Get out of my sight."

Arthur and Richard stared at Daniel in shock, utterly unaccustomed to him fighting back. They scrambled into their car and sped away.

Daniel turned to me, breathing heavily, his hands trembling. I walked over and wrapped my arms tightly around his waist. He buried his face in my hair, weeping silently as he finally let go of the toxic family that had bound him for decades.
