Chapter 6 - The Gag Order & The Tapes

Armed with Sarah’s financial audit, we didn't waste a single second.

The next morning, we met with District Attorney Karen Vance in her downtown office. When DA Vance reviewed the forged trust documents alongside the toxicology reports, her eyes burned with professional fury.

"This elevates the entire scope of the prosecution," DA Vance declared. "Marianne Carter didn't just commit child endangerment; she had a financial motive to undermine Emily’s parental fitness."

Within forty-eight hours, DA Vance filed emergency motions in court.

Judge Robert Sterling—a no-nonsense magistrate known for his tough stance on white-collar crime and domestic abuse—held an emergency hearing.

Marianne sat at the defense table alongside her high-priced lawyer, Marcus Sterling. She looked smug, wearing a tailored navy suit, clearly believing her family's status would shield her.

Judge Sterling slammed his gavel down.

"Mrs. Carter," Judge Sterling began, his voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. "It has come to this court's attention that you have engaged in an active media campaign to defame the victim’s mother while under indictment for serious felony offenses."

Marcus Sterling stood up defensively. "Your Honor, my client is simply exercising her First Amendment rights to defend her public reputation against false—"

"Sit down, Mr. Sterling!" Judge Sterling barked. "I am issuing an immediate, strict gag order. If your client speaks to a reporter, posts on social media, or contacts the victim’s family directly or through third parties, I will revoke her bail immediately, and she will wait for her trial inside a county jail cell."

Marianne’s smug expression crumbled. She gripped the edge of the table, her knuckles turning white.

"Furthermore," Judge Sterling continued, "in light of the credible financial fraud evidence submitted regarding the victim's trust fund, I am freezing all personal accounts and LLC assets tied to Marianne Carter and her associates pending full forensic review."

Across the gallery, Marianne’s brothers, Arthur and Richard, went pale. The financial safety net they had used to fund their lavish lifestyle and pay for Marianne’s elite defense lawyers was instantly frozen solid.

As we walked out of the courtroom, Marianne looked at me through the crowd. For the first time, her cutting tongue was silenced. In her eyes, I didn't see arrogance anymore. I saw the cold, creeping terror of a woman whose fortress was crumbling around her.
