Chapter 2 - The Hospital Room

The private jet touched down at Chicago O'Hare International Airport at 1:15 AM.

True to Daniel’s word, a sleek black SUV was waiting directly on the tarmac. Within seconds of the cabin doors opening, Emily and Daniel were in the back seat, tearing through the quiet, snow-dusted streets of midnight Chicago behind flashing blue emergency lights provided by a private escort service Daniel had arranged during the flight.

By 1:35 AM, they were sprinting through the glass sliding doors of Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The clinical smell of antiseptic, rubbing alcohol, and floor wax rushed into Emily’s nostrils—a smell she knew intimately from her six years as an ER nurse, but tonight, it terrified her.

"Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit," Emily gasped to the desk nurse at the entrance. "Linda Carter!"

"Fifth floor, Pod B," the nurse directed.

They rode the elevator in tense silence, the digital floor numbers ticking upward with agonizing slowness. When the doors slid open on the fifth floor, the low, rhythmic hum of heart monitors and ventilator alarms echoed down the dimly lit hallway.

"Emily!" a voice called out.

Dr. Harris, a tall, gray-haired man in blue scrubs, stepped out of Room 512. He looked weary, his eyes bloodshot behind round spectacles.

"Dr. Harris!" Emily ran forward, her sneakers squeaking on the linoleum floor. "How is she?"

"She's hanging on, Emily," Dr. Harris said, offering a compassionate, tired smile. "Her pressure is stable for the moment. She's awake, but she's very weak. Go on in."

Emily didn't hesitate. She threw open the heavy door to Room 512.

The room was bathed in the soft blue glow of medical monitors. In the center of the room, lying in the high-tech hospital bed, was Linda Carter.

She looked so small. The vibrant, fiery woman who had raised Emily single-handedly, who had laughed loud enough to shake windows, now looked fragile, her skin pale and waxy, surrounded by IV lines, a nasal cannula delivering oxygen, and telemetry leads taped across her chest.

"Mom," Emily sobbed, rushing to the bedside and dropping to her knees. She grabbed her mother’s cold, thin hand, pressing it against her face, weeping uncontrollably. "Mom, I'm here. I'm here."

Linda’s eyes fluttered open slowly. Her pale blue eyes were clouded with weakness, but the moment they landed on Emily, a soft, trembling warmth lit up her face.

"Em... Emily," Linda whispered, her voice barely a dry rasp beneath the oxygen tube. "My baby girl..."

"I'm sorry it took me so long," Emily cried, kissing her mother’s bruised, IV-riddled knuckles. "I'm so sorry, Mom."

"You're here..." Linda breathed out, her thumb feebly wiping a tear from Emily’s cheek. "That's all... that matters."

Behind Emily, the door opened softly. Daniel stepped inside the room, holding his coat over his arm, standing near the doorway to give them privacy while remaining close enough to offer support.

Linda’s gaze shifted past Emily’s shoulder, settling on the tall man standing in the shadows of the room. Her breath suddenly hitched in her throat.

The heart monitor’s steady beep accelerated slightly. Beep... beep... beep-beep-beep.

"Mom?" Emily asked in panic, looking at the monitor, then at her mother. "What's wrong? Are you in pain?"

Linda didn't answer Emily. Her pale eyes were fixed entirely on Daniel Whitmore. Her fingers twitched against Emily’s hand, reaching out feebly toward the door.

Daniel blinked, surprised by her sudden focus on him. He took two slow steps closer to the bed. "Mrs. Carter? I'm Daniel. I helped Emily get here tonight."

Linda’s gaze wasn't on Daniel’s face. It was pinned directly to his left wrist.

To the worn, vintage leather watch with the scratched silver casing that protruded from his shirt sleeve.

Linda’s chest rose and fell sharply. Tears suddenly pooled in the corners of her frail eyes, spilling down her pale cheeks.

"The... the watch," Linda gasped out, her voice trembling violently with a sudden surge of profound emotion. "Where... where did you get... that watch?"

Daniel froze. His face went completely pale. He looked down at the old watch his mother had given him before her death, then looked back at Linda Carter in total bewilderment.

"My... my mother gave it to me," Daniel said slowly, his voice laced with confusion. "It belonged to her brother."

May you like

Linda let out a strangled, weeping gasp. She raised her weak hand, pointing a trembling finger directly at Daniel.

"David..." Linda whispered, her voice cracking with a ghost from thirty years past. "David's watch..."
