Chapter 3 - Ghosts of the Past

The ICU room fell into a dead, suffocating silence.
The rhythm of the heart monitor was the only sound echoing in the small space: Beep... Beep... Beep.
Emily looked back and forth between her dying mother and the billionaire standing beside her bed, her mind spinning into complete confusion. "Mom? What are you talking about? Who is David?"
Linda’s breathing was shallow, her eyes fixed on Daniel with a mixture of overwhelming sorrow and shocking recognition. "Your uncle... David. My brother."
Emily stared at her mother. "Mom, you don't have a brother. You told me you were an only child! You said your family died in a car accident when you were young!"
"I lied," Linda wept, her pale chest heaving under the thin hospital blanket. "I lied to protect you... to protect us all from the Whitmores..."
Daniel stepped forward, his body rigid, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles quivered. "What did you just say?" he demanded, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register. "Did you say Whitmore?"
"Your mother... was Sarah Whitmore," Linda whispered, her eyes brimming with ancient tears. "And your father... was Arthur Whitmore."
Daniel looked as if he had been struck by lightning. He staggered back half a step, hitting the edge of the medical cabinet. "How do you know my parents' names?"
"Because thirty years ago..." Linda choked out, struggling for breath as Dr. Harris stepped into the room, alerted by the rising heart rates on the telemetry monitor outside.
"Mrs. Carter, please, you need to calm down," Dr. Harris warned, checking the monitor. "Your blood pressure is spiking."
"No!" Linda cried feebly, gripping Emily’s hand with surprising strength. "I have to tell them... before I die. Emily... Daniel is not a stranger."
Emily felt the world tilt on its axis. "Mom, what are you talking about?"
"Daniel..." Linda looked at the tall man, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. "Daniel is your cousin. My brother David... was his father."
Daniel stared at Linda in complete, absolute shock. "My father was Arthur Whitmore! He was an investment banker!"
"No," Linda sobbed, shaking her head weakly. "Arthur Whitmore was your grandfather! He forced your mother, Sarah, to marry his youngest son, Richard, after David... after David was killed!"
Daniel swallowed hard, his face turning as white as the hospital sheets. "My father died in a plane crash when I was two years old. My mother never spoke about his family. She cut all ties with the Whitmore empire when I was ten!"
"Because Arthur Whitmore was a monster!" Linda cried, her oxygen mask fogging with every ragged breath. "Thirty years ago, David Whitmore was the brilliant heir to Whitmore Infrastructure. He fell in love with me—a poor nursing student from South Chicago. When I got pregnant... Arthur threatened to ruin my family, to take my baby away. David tried to run away with me. He took his car... and he crashed into the river. They said it was an accident. But it wasn't. Arthur sabotaged his steering..."
Emily gasped, covering her mouth in sheer horror.
"I ran away," Linda wept, reaching out to touch Daniel’s arm. "I was terrified. I changed my name, moved away, and raised my baby girl alone. But David’s sister... your mother, Sarah... she found me before I left. She gave me her ring, and she kept David’s watch. She promised me that if David’s child ever survived the Whitmore family darkness, she would give him his father's watch..."
Linda’s voice broke into a violent coughing fit.
The heart monitor suddenly burst into a frantic, high-pitched alarm. BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!
"Ventricular tachycardia!" Dr. Harris shouted, shoving past Daniel and Emily. "Code Blue! Get the crash cart in here now!"
"Mom!" Emily screamed as nurses rushed into the room, pushing her and Daniel back against the wall.
"Emily!" Linda cried out as a doctor began manual chest compressions. "The box... in my closet at home... the letters from Sarah!"

"Clear!" a nurse called out, charging the defibrillator paddles.
"No! Mom!" Emily sobbed violently as Daniel wrapped his strong arms around her waist, pulling her out into the hallway as the medical team fought desperately to save Linda Carter’s life.
