Chapter 3 - The Rehearsal Dinner Crash

By Friday evening—thirty-six hours after my surgery—the story had already begun to leak through the city's private event channels.
Chloe’s wedding was supposed to be the social event of the season for Eleanor’s circle. The venue was the Royal Crest Manor, a hilltop estate with crystal chandeliers, marble fountains, and a five-course dinner menu paid for entirely with my blood money.
In my private room on the progressive care unit, I sat upright in bed, a clean hospital gown draped over my shoulders. Standing at the foot of my bed were two people who had flown in the moment they heard the news: my former commanding officer from my private security days, Marcus Vance, and a brilliant civil litigation attorney named Sarah Sterling.
"The freezing orders were served on the vendors three hours ago, Harper," Sarah said, tapping her tablet screen. "Because the funds were identified as proceeds of a felony bank fraud, every single vendor—the venue, the decorator, the high-end caterer, even the bridal boutique—is legally required to place those funds into an escrow hold or face federal accomplice charges."
"Which means?" I asked.
Marcus chuckled darkly, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. "Which means, kid, the Royal Crest Manor just locked their gates."
At 7:00 PM that same evening, the grand rehearsal dinner at the Royal Crest Manor was in full swing.
Fifty guests in evening gowns and tailored suits sat around a forty-foot banquet table adorned with white orchids and silver candelabras. Chloe sat at the head of the table in a white silk cocktail dress, sipping vintage champagne, while Eleanor stood at the podium with a microphone in her hand.
"To my beautiful daughter, Chloe," Eleanor announced, raising her glass with a radiant, practiced smile. "May your marriage be as flawless, opulent, and grand as this magnificent evening..."
CLACK.
The massive double doors of the ballroom slammed open.
The laughter died down instantly. Eleanor froze, the microphone squealing with feedback as two uniformed officers from the Financial Crimes Unit stepped into the room, followed by three process servers in dark suits.
Behind them stood the general manager of the Royal Crest Manor, his face red with fury.
"Mrs. Reed!" the manager shouted, stepping toward the head table. "Your event is terminated effective immediately!"
Chloe dropped her champagne glass. It shattered against the white marble floor, sparkling wine splashing over her designer shoes. "What?! What are you talking about? This is my rehearsal dinner!"
"The $48,000 wire transfer used to book this hall was executed via a fraudulent power-of-attorney from a stolen medical trust!" the manager barked, pulling a legal injunction from his jacket. "The federal marshals have frozen our merchant account! Security is clearing this building right now!"
The fifty guests gasped in unison. Whispers erupted across the room like wildfire.
"Stolen medical trust?" a woman in the third row whispered. "Is that... isn't that Harper's money?"
"I heard Harper collapsed in the ER two days ago!" another guest exclaimed. "Eleanor told everyone Harper was in Europe on a business trip!"
Eleanor dropped the microphone. It hit the floor with a deafening THUD that echoed off the grand walls.

"This is an outrage!" Eleanor screamed, her polished composure disintegrating into wild, panicked rage. "You can't do this to my family! The wedding is tomorrow!"
"There won't be a wedding tomorrow, Mrs. Reed," Detective Cross said, stepping past the officers with a set of steel handcuffs in her hand. "Eleanor Reed, you are under arrest for grand larceny, identity theft, financial exploitation, and criminal reckless endangerment."
