Chapter 5 - The Mastermind Behind the Curtain

Two weeks after my surgery, I was discharged from the hospital and moved into a quiet, secure apartment leased for me by Marcus’s security agency.

While my body healed, Sarah Sterling was tearing through my mother's financial records like a storm.

One afternoon, Sarah arrived at my apartment with three thick binders full of bank statements, tax returns, and property deeds spanning the last decade.

"Harper," Sarah said, setting her laptop on my dining table. "We found something far bigger than the $150,000 stole for the wedding."

I poured two cups of tea and sat down opposite her. "What do you mean?"

"When your father passed away seven years ago," Sarah explained, opening a blue ledger, "he left a $500,000 survivor benefit annuity specifically designated for you and Chloe to share equally once you turned twenty-one."

My heart skipped a beat. "Dad left an annuity? Mom told us he died broke... she said his medical bills ate up his entire estate."

"That was a lie," Sarah declared flatly. "Eleanor forged your signature on a trustee waiver when you were nineteen years old. She diverted the entire $500,000 into a private holding account. Over the last seven years, she’s used that money to finance Chloe's private college tuition, Chloe’s European summer trips, Chloe’s first car, and her own lifestyle."

I sat in complete silence, the tea growing cold in my hands.

Every memory of my twenties flashed before my eyes in a cruel new light.

When I begged Eleanor for help paying my college tuition, she told me I had to work night shifts to learn 'independence.' When I was short on rent after my first security job, she called me irresponsible. Meanwhile, Chloe was flying first-class to Paris and wearing designer clothes, funded by the money my father had left for both of us.

"She didn't just steal my surgery money," I whispered, a cold, dark anger settling deep into my chest. "She erased my entire youth."

"She did," Sarah agreed grimly. "And because she used interstate banking channels to execute the forged waivers seven years ago, this isn't just state grand larceny anymore. This is federal wire fraud and bank embezzlement."

Sarah leaned forward, tapping a red folder on the table.

"The District Attorney is offering Eleanor a plea bargain: ten years in state prison if she forfeits all assets and returns what's left. Or... we hand this new evidence to the Federal Prosecutor, and she faces twenty-five years without parole."

I looked out the window at the city skyline.

For years, I had believed that if I just worked harder, sacrificed more, and endured enough neglect, my mother would eventually love me the way she loved Chloe. I had almost died on a cold hospital floor holding onto that delusion.

"Hand it to the feds, Sarah," I said, my voice steady as stone. "Every single page."
