Chapter 6 - The Assets Under the Hammer

The legal machinery moved with terrifying speed once the federal prosecutors stepped in.
With Eleanor facing federal indictments, the court placed an immediate freeze on all her assets—including her prized three-bedroom suburban home, her luxury SUV, and her extensive collection of antique jewelry.
Because the stolen funds from my father’s annuity and my medical account had been commingled with the mortgage payments on her house, Sarah filed an immediate lien on the property on my behalf.
One month later, a court-ordered civil auction was announced.
On a bright Tuesday morning, I walked up the driveway of my childhood home. I wore a tailored black suit, my dark hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail, walking tall without the aid of a cane. Beside me walked Marcus Vance and Sarah Sterling.
The front lawn was filled with folding chairs, auctioneers, and prospective real estate buyers.
Standing near the garage doors, looking disheveled and frantic, was Chloe. She was living out of her car, her designer clothes replaced by faded jeans, her phone buzzing constantly with calls from debt collectors.
When she saw me step onto the driveway, her eyes went wide.
"Harper!" Chloe ran over, her face pale. "Harper, you have to stop this auction! If they sell the house, I won't have anywhere to live! Mom's lawyer said all the proceeds are going directly to you!"
"The proceeds are satisfying the federal restitution order, Chloe," I said calmly, looking at the house where I had spent years being treated like an invisible ghost. "This house was built on Dad's stolen money and my blood."
"Where am I supposed to go?!" Chloe sobbed, grabbing my sleeve. "I don't have a job! I don't have any money left! All my friends blocked my number after the news articles came out!"
I stopped and slowly removed her fingers from my jacket sleeve.
"You have two hands and two feet, Chloe," I said coldly. "You can work eighty hours a week in a rail yard like I did. You can sleep in cheap motels like I did. You can learn what life actually costs."
The auctioneer’s gavel struck the wooden podium with a loud CRACK.
"Sold!" the auctioneer shouted into his microphone. "To Vanguard Legal Trust on behalf of Miss Harper Reed, for $750,000!"

Chloe gasped, staring at me in absolute shock. "You... you bought the house?"
"I seized the house," I corrected her. "And as the new legal owner... you have ten minutes to clear your personal belongings off my lawn before security removes you for trespassing."
