Chapter 3 - The Call to the Depths

The weight of the isolation cell was crushing. Emily sat on the hard concrete bench, her knees pulled to her chest, staring at the painted brick wall. She had been allowed one phone call. She hadn't called her mother—the shock would kill her. Instead, she had dialed the only person who possessed the intelligence, the resourcefulness, and the absolute lack of fear required to pull her out of this grave.

She had called David Sterling.

David was a brilliant, independent investigative journalist who specialized in exposing corporate corruption and white-collar crime in Los Angeles. He was also Emily’s childhood friend. They had grown up in the same working-class neighborhood before their paths diverged—Emily into the quiet world of estate management, and David into the dangerous, high-stakes world of investigative reporting.

The door to the visitor's room buzzed open the following morning. Emily was led out in an orange jumpsuit, her wrists chained to her waist. Across the thick plexiglass partition sat David. He looked sharp, his dark eyes intense, a leather notebook already open in front of him.

The moment he saw her in the jumpsuit, his jaw clenched, a flash of pure fury crossing his features before he forced his professional composure back into place. He picked up the plastic telephone receiver. Emily did the same.

"Emily," David said, his voice deep and reassuring through the static of the line. "Tell me everything. Start from the very beginning, and don't leave out a single detail."

Emily talked for twenty minutes without stopping. She explained the gala preparations, the missing bracelet, the empty box planted in her bag, the fifteen minutes her bag sat alone in the foyer, and the convenient "system update" that erased the foyer security footage.

David listened intently, his pen moving rapidly across the paper. When she mentioned Julian’s name, he stopped writing. He looked up, his eyes narrowing.

"Julian Hayes," David murmured. "Interesting. Emily, did you know that Julian has been under quiet investigation by the SEC for the last three months?"

Emily blinked, stunned. "The Securities and Exchange Commission? No, Victoria never mentioned anything. She thinks he's a financial genius."

"He’s a financial gambler," David corrected coldly. "He’s been heavily shorting tech stocks using a margin account registered to a shell company in the Cayman Islands. Last week, the market rallied unexpectedly. Julian’s position was liquidated. He owes a private offshore brokerage firm close to two million dollars, and they aren't the type of people who accept late payments."

The pieces of the puzzle suddenly slammed together in Emily’s mind. "He didn't just steal the bracelet to frame me. He stole it because he desperately needs the money to pay off his debts before Victoria realizes he’s been embezzling from the estate accounts."

"Exactly," David said, nodding. "He needed a quick cash injection, and he needed a perfect distraction so Victoria wouldn't audit the estate books before the annual tax filing next month. You were the perfect target, Em. You have a clear financial motive because of your mother's medical bills, and you had access to the master wing."

"But how do we prove it, David?" Emily asked, her voice cracking as she pressed her forehead against the cool plexiglass. "The security footage is gone. The police found the box in my bag. The evidence is entirely against me."

David leaned closer to the glass, his expression fiercely determined. "The security footage from inside the house might be gone, but Julian made a massive mistake. He forgot about the neighborhood. The Bel Air Homeowners Association has high-definition, AI-powered license plate recognition cameras at every intersection and driveway entrance in the hills to prevent high-end burglaries. If Julian moved that bracelet off the property to a private fence or a safety deposit box during that system update, those cameras caught his car leaving and arriving."

He stood up, closing his notebook. "I’m going to get those logs, Emily. And I’m going to find out exactly who Julian has been meeting with. Hang tight. I’m getting you out of here."
