Chapter 5 - The Pressure Rises

The following morning, Julian Hayes sat in his plush, leather-lined office inside the Hayes mansion, sipping an espresso. The charity gala was scheduled to begin in five hours. The grand ballroom was buzzing with decorators, and Victoria was downstairs, completely consumed by grief over her mother’s bracelet but determined to maintain appearances for the high-society guests.
Everything was going perfectly for Julian. Emily was locked up in a county holding cell, her bail set at an impossible five hundred thousand dollars. The police were focused entirely on her, and the estate accounts had been swept clean of another fifty thousand dollars under the guise of "gala operational costs" to cover his immediate interest payments.
Suddenly, his laptop vibrated with an incoming high-priority notification.
Julian clicked the email open. The sender address was an encrypted string of numbers. The subject line read: Margin Account Liquidation—Final Notice.
Julian’s espresso cup rattled against its saucer, spilling dark liquid onto his mahogany desk. His face drained of color, turning a sickly, pasty white.
"No, no, no," he muttered, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps.
He had calculated he had until next month to sell the bracelet through his private contact in Antwerp. He had already moved it to the Avalon Vaults to keep it safe from any unexpected police searches at the house. But now, his creditors were threatening absolute ruin within hours.
If Victoria discovered he had been draining the family trust funds, she wouldn't just cut him out of the will—she would press charges herself. He would go from a Bel Air prince to a federal inmate overnight.
He had no choice. He had to retrieve the bracelet from the Avalon Vaults today, bypass his usual international fence, and sell it to a local, high-risk pawn dealer in downtown LA who dealt in stolen luxury goods for fifty cents on the dollar. It was a massive financial loss, but it would buy him the time he desperately needed.
Julian rushed out of his office, completely unaware that his laptop's internal camera had been quietly activated by a remote trojan virus David Sterling had embedded in a spoofed estate invoice three days prior.
Across town, inside his apartment office, David watched the live video stream of Julian panicked, rushing out of the room while grabbing his car keys.
David immediately picked up his phone, dialing Detective Miller’s direct line.
"Detective Miller," David said, his voice urgent. "If you want the actual Hayes heirloom and the real thief, you need to get a surveillance unit to the Avalon Vaults in Beverly Hills right now. Julian Hayes is on his way there to retrieve the bracelet. If you let him leave that facility without stopping him, that diamond is going to disappear into the black market forever."

On the other end of the line, Miller fell silent for a long moment. "Sterling, you're playing a dangerous game. If you're wasting my time—"
"Look at the license plate data I emailed you ten minutes ago, Detective!" David shouted. "Julian left the house during the exact hour the security cameras were dark. He lied to you. He’s the one who planted the box in Emily’s bag. Follow the car, Miller. Let the truth speak for itself."
