Chapter 6 - The Beverly Hills Confrontation

The underground parking structure of the Avalon Vaults was cool, brightly lit, and quiet, smelling faintly of exhaust and high-end car wax. Julian parked his Porsche in a dark corner near the elevator bay. He left the engine idling, his hands slick with sweat as he gripped the steering wheel.
He climbed out of the car, walked into the secure lobby of the vault facility, and passed through the multi-layered biometric scans. Ten minutes later, he emerged back into the parking structure, holding a small, heavy velvet pouch concealed inside his inner jacket pocket. He had the bracelet.
Julian let out a long, shaky breath of relief. He walked quickly toward his car, reaching for the door handle.
"Going somewhere, Julian?" a voice called out from the shadows of the concrete pillars.
Julian spun around, his heart leaping into his throat. Walking toward him was David Sterling, holding a digital video camera, its recording light glowing a steady, menacing red. Beside David was Detective Miller, his hands resting casually near the service weapon on his belt.
"What is the meaning of this?" Julian sneered, trying to summon his usual defensive arrogance, though his voice pitched higher than normal. "Sterling, you're trespassing on private property. And Detective... why are you listening to this tabloid journalist?"
"Mr. Hayes," Detective Miller said, stepping forward, his expression completely unreadable. "We’ve been reviewing some interesting traffic logs from yesterday afternoon. It seems you took a little twenty-minute trip down the hills right when you claimed you were in the house fixing the server rooms. Care to explain what you were doing here yesterday at 2:10 PM?"
Julian’s eyes darted between Miller and the exit ramp. He felt the walls closing in. "I... I have a private storage unit here for my personal investments. That’s not a crime. My personal life is none of your business."
"It becomes our business when a 1.4-million-dollar heirloom goes missing and the exact box turns up in an innocent girl's bag," David said, stepping closer, the camera focused entirely on Julian's pale face. "What’s in your jacket pocket right now, Julian? Is it your 'personal investment,' or is it your stepmother’s anniversary bracelet that you’re about to sell to a fence downtown to pay off your illegal offshore margin debts?"
"You don't know anything!" Julian shouted, his composure shattering entirely. He reached into his pocket, his hand wrapping around the velvet pouch as if he were considering throwing it down the drain.
"Don't even think about it, Mr. Hayes," Detective Miller said, his tone turning razor-sharp as he unclipped his holster. "Place your hands on the hood of the car. Now."
Julian stood frozen for a fraction of a second, his brain desperately searching for a legal loophole, a lie, a way out. But looking into the dark, determined eyes of Detective Miller and the unblinking lens of David’s camera, he realized the truth. The game was over.
Slowly, his shoulders slumping, Julian reached into his inner pocket, pulled out the velvet pouch, and dropped it onto the hood of his Porsche. The heavy, metallic thud echoed through the quiet structure.
Miller stepped forward, pulled open the drawstring of the pouch, and tipped the contents onto the metal surface.

Under the bright fluorescent lights of the garage, the Hayes anniversary bracelet tumbled out. The diamonds caught the light, flashing with a brilliant, blinding fire—a timeless piece of history, completely intact, completely recovered.
"Julian Hayes," Detective Miller said, pulling his handcuffs out with a satisfying click. "You’re under arrest for grand larceny, filing a false police report, and obstruction of justice. You have the right to remain silent..."
