Chapter 3 - Confrontation at the Banquet

"Ethan!" my mother gasped, dropping her glass onto the white linen tablecloth, red wine blooming across the fabric like blood. She quickly stood up, putting on a grand, theatrical smile. "My son! My brave boy! You're back early! Why didn't you tell us? Look, everyone! My son, the world-famous restaurateur, has returned!"
Michael set his drink down, a nervous grin spreading across his face as he stepped forward with open arms. "Ethan! Brother! Man, you should have called! We would have thrown an even bigger party!"
I didn't move. I didn't smile. I stood firmly beside Emma, holding her hand so tightly that everyone in the room could see the contrast between us: me in a five-thousand-dollar suit, Emma in dirty rags, and my family dripping in stolen luxury.
"Why is my wife scrubbing grease off catering pots in the yard, Mother?" I asked, my voice carrying clearly to every corner of the silent room.
A collective gasp echoed among the guests. People began exchanging uncomfortable glances.
My mother’s smile faltered, but she quickly smoothed her silk dress and adjusted her diamond necklace—the necklace that belonged to my wife.
"Ethan, please," Margaret said smoothly, taking a graceful step forward, trying to downplay the situation. "Don't make a scene in front of our distinguished guests. Emma... well, Emma enjoys being useful! She knows she isn't built for high-society hosting, so she offered to manage the back-of-house staff today. Isn't that right, Emma?"
My mother fixed Emma with a sharp, warning glare—a look that clearly said: Agree with me or you'll pay for it later.
I felt Emma flinch beside me. She opened her mouth to speak, her voice trembling. "I... I..."
"Don't you dare lie to protect them, Emma," I whispered gently into her ear. "Look at me. Nobody in this room can hurt you ever again."
Emma looked up at me, seeing the absolute fire and unwavering devotion in my eyes. She swallowed her fear, stood up straight, and looked directly at my mother.
"I didn't offer," Emma said, her voice clear and strong. "Margaret took my phone and credit cards three years ago. She told me Ethan ordered her to manage my life because I was a financial liability. She made me live in the small housekeeper's room behind the garage and made me do all the cleaning and cooking for Jennifer and Michael every single day."
A wave of shocked whispers exploded through the dining room.
"That’s a lie!" Michael yelled, stepping forward with his face red. "She’s crazy, Ethan! She’s mentally unstable! Mother has been taking care of her because she was spending all your money!"
"Is that why you're wearing my bespoke watch, Michael?" I asked quietly, pointing at his wrist.
Michael instinctively pulled his cuff down, his face turning bright red.
"And that necklace, Mother," I continued, walking over to the head of the table. "I bought that in Zurich for Emma’s 30th birthday. The receipt had her name on it. How did it end up on your neck?"
Margaret reached up, clutching the diamonds defensively. "Ethan! I am your mother! I gave birth to you! Everything you have belongs to this family! You owe me your success!"
"I owe you respect as a mother," I said, my voice dropping into a deadly quiet. "I do not owe you my wife’s dignity. I do not owe you my life's work while you treat the woman who stood by me when I was broke like a slave."
I turned toward the fifty wealthy guests sitting at the table.
"Get out," I said calmly.
"Ethan, please!" Jennifer cried out from behind me. "These are important business contacts!"
"I said GET OUT!" I roared, slamming my fist onto the mahogany table so hard that crystal glasses shattered across the wood. "EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU! LEAVE MY HOUSE NOW BEFORE I HAVE SECURITY THROW YOU INTO THE STREET!"

Panic erupted. The guests scrambled out of their chairs, grabbing their coats and hurrying toward the front doors as fast as their legs could carry them, terrified of the fury in my eyes.
Within three minutes, the grand dining room was empty, leaving only me, Emma, and my stunned, cornered family.
