Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail of Greed

The silence that followed the guests' hasty departure was thick and suffocating.

My mother sat back down in her chair, weeping dramatically, holding a silk handkerchief to her eyes. "You humiliated me! In front of the entire country club! How could you do this to your own mother?"

"Where are her bank cards, Mother?" I demanded, sitting down across from her.

"Ethan, darling, listen to reason," Jennifer tried to interject, sitting beside our mother. "Emma doesn't understand high finance! She was giving money to local art charities and poor families! We were just preserving your wealth—"

"Where are the cards?" I repeated, leaning over the table.

Michael, realizing that the game was entirely up, reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a black leather wallet, and tossed three platinum credit cards onto the table. "There! Take them! She was going to ruin us anyway with her pathetic little guilt trips!"

I picked up the cards. They were all in Emma’s name, but the signatures on the back were forged in my sister's handwriting.

"How much?" I asked.

"What?" Michael frowned.

"How much did you steal from her over the last five years?" I asked, pulling out my phone and calling my personal chief financial attorney, Richard Sterling.

"Ethan, you can't be serious!" Margaret sobbed, dropping the handkerchief facade. "We are your family! We raised you! We used that money to build the family's social standing! Michael started his real estate firm! Jennifer bought her townhome!"

"On her line," Richard Sterling answered the phone. "Ethan? Welcome back to Texas. Is everything all right?"

"Richard," I said, keeping my eyes locked on my mother. "I need an emergency forensic audit of the Duca Family Trust account immediately. Freeze all sub-accounts registered to Margaret, Jennifer, and Michael Duca within the next ten minutes."

"What?!" Michael screamed, jumping out of his chair. "Ethan, no! My firm’s payroll is tied to that account!"

"Not anymore," I said into the phone. "Richard, file an emergency petition for power of attorney revocation and asset seizure based on grand larceny and financial elder abuse."

"I'm on it right now, Ethan," Richard replied crisply. "The freeze will be active in five minutes."

"You monster!" my mother shrieked, standing up and pointing a trembling finger at me. "I am your mother! You can't do this to me!"

"You ceased being my mother the moment you handed my wife a scrub brush and put her in a garage room while you wore her diamonds," I replied coldly.

I stood up, took Emma’s hand, and looked down at the three of them.

"You have two hours to pack your personal clothes," I said. "If I see any of you, your belongings, or any item purchased with my money on this property after 8:00 PM, I will have the Sheriff’s Department arrest you for criminal trespassing and grand theft."

May you like

"Ethan, please!" Jennifer wailed, finally realizing the nightmare she had created for herself. "Where are we supposed to go?"

"You have designer clothes and expensive luxury cars," I said as I turned my back on them. "Sell them."
