Chapter 3 - The Eviction Notice

Rachel looked down at the white envelope with a mixture of annoyance and confusion. "What is this? A bill for dinner?"
"Open it," I said.
With a loud, dramatic sigh, Rachel broke the seal and pulled out the legal document inside. As her eyes scanned the top header—OFFICIAL NOTICE TO VACATE PREMISES: STERLING TRUST HOLDINGS—the color instantly drained from her cheeks.
"What... what is this?" Rachel stuttered, her voice cracking. "A thirty-day notice to vacate? Clara, what kind of sick joke is this?!"
"It's no joke, Rachel," I replied calmly, cutting a piece of chicken on my plate. "The luxury three-bedroom townhome you've lived in rent-free for the past five years belongs to the Sterling Estate Trust. As sole executor of that trust, I have deemed your tenancy an improper use of trust assets. You have thirty days to pack your things, return the keys, and leave."
"Dad!" Rachel shrieked, springing out of her chair, turning to our father with wild eyes. "Dad, tell her she can't do this! You gave me that townhome!"
Arthur’s face flushed dark red. He slammed his hand onto the table, making the glasses rattle. "Clara! Have you lost your mind?! You cannot evict your sister! I authorized her residency!"
"You authorized it without legal authority, Dad," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "You don't own that townhome. The trust does. And speaking of the trust..."
I pulled a second folder from my bag and set it directly in front of my father.
"As of 9:00 AM this morning, I have executed a full revocation of the commercial line of credit granted to your firm, Sterling Properties. Furthermore, I have initiated a formal forensic audit into the two hundred thousand dollars of trust dividends you diverted into Rachel's personal banking accounts over the last four years without board approval."
Arthur froze. The outrage on his face melted instantly into absolute, naked shock. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.
"Arthur?" Eleanor squeaked, looking back and forth between her husband and me. "What is she talking about? What credit line?!"
"Clara..." Arthur stammered, his hands beginning to shake slightly. "You... you can't revoke that credit line. We have three commercial acquisitions closing next week! If those funds are frozen, the bank will default my firm!"
"Then I suggest you find alternative financing," I said softly. "Perhaps from a 'real' family member."
"YOU MONSTER!" Rachel screamed, her knuckles white as she gripped the back of her chair. "You are destroying our family over a orphan girl who isn't even yours!"
Michael stood up. Standing at six-foot-two with broad shoulders, his towering presence completely dominated the dining room. He pointed a finger directly at Rachel's face.
"Say one more word about my daughter," Michael growled, "and I will personally throw you out onto the front lawn right now."
Rachel shrank back, her mouth snapping shut.
Chloe began to cry, frightened by the sudden screaming. Eleanor scrambled out of her seat, trying to comfort her granddaughter while staring at me as if I were a stranger.
"Clara," Eleanor pleaded, her eyes filled with tears. "How can you be so cruel? We are your parents! Rachel is your sister! How can you choose her over us?!"
She pointed a trembling, finger toward Leah, who was sitting quietly in her big chair, watching the scene with wide, intelligent eyes.
I stood up slowly, leaning across the table, my hands flat against the wood.
"I didn't choose to tear this family apart, Mom," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. "You did. The moment you stood in that hallway, smiled at me, and let Rachel destroy my child's sense of safety while I was fighting for my life in a hospital bed—you made your choice. I am simply enforcing the consequences."

I walked over to the front door and opened it wide, letting the cool night air flood into the foyer.
"Dinner is over," I declared. "Get out of my house."
