Chapter 9 - The Arrival

Three weeks later.

The autumn leaves were turning golden yellow outside the hospital windows.

The room smelled of soft baby lotion and fresh flowers. I lay in the hospital bed, exhausted but filled with an overwhelming, radiant sense of joy. In my arms rested a healthy, seven-pound baby boy—our son, Leo David Bennett.

Michael sat on the edge of the bed, his arm wrapped around my shoulders, gazing down at our sleeping newborn.

The door to the room opened softly.

David Stern stepped in, carrying a small gift bag, followed by our close family friend Sarah, who had been watching Leah while I was in labor.

Leah walked into the room, holding Sarah's hand. She wore a shirt that proudly read: BIG SISTER.

She stopped near the foot of the bed, her eyes wide as she looked at the tiny bundle in my arms.

"Leah, sweetie," I whispered, reaching out my hand to her. "Come meet your baby brother."

Leah walked slowly to the side of the bed. Michael lifted her gently, setting her down on the mattress right beside me.

She leaned over, staring intensely at Leo’s tiny, sleeping face. She reached out one small finger, gently touching his soft cheek. Leo shifted slightly, his tiny hand opening up and grasping onto Leah’s finger with surprising strength.

Leah gasped softly, a huge, radiant smile spreading across her face.

"He likes me!" she whispered excitedly.

"Of course he likes you," Michael said, stroking her hair. "He has the best big sister in the world."

Leah looked up at me, her eyes clear and filled with absolute trust. "Mommy? Is there enough room for both of us?"

Tears of pure, beautiful joy welled up in my eyes. I reached out, pulling Leah close against my side, her head resting right beside her baby brother on my chest.

"Sweetheart," I said, kissing her forehead. "You don't ever have to worry about room again. You didn't just take up space in our house—you built the foundation of this entire family. You are his big sister, my daughter, and nothing in this world will ever change that."

Leah smiled, wrapping her arm gently around her baby brother, holding him close.
