Chapter 6 - Desperate Measures

Two weeks passed.

The fallout from the exposed post destroyed what remained of my family's social standing.

Arthur’s commercial real estate firm suffered a massive blow. Two major financial backers, spooked by the public allegations of trust fraud and forensic audits, pulled their capital from his upcoming shopping center development. Facing bankruptcy, Arthur was forced to sell his luxury sports car and place his firm under temporary receivership to avoid federal fraud charges.

Rachel, unable to secure alternative housing without a high income or rental history, was forced to move into a tiny, two-bedroom apartment on the far side of town, using what little savings she had left to pay a six-month deposit upfront.

Yet, despite their crumbling lives, their entitlement did not die. It merely mutated into desperate, dangerous rage.

It was a Tuesday afternoon. Michael was at his corporate office, and I was at home with Leah. We had spent the morning painting her bedroom walls a beautiful soft lavender, covering the ceiling with glow-in-the-dark stars. Leah was upstairs taking a nap, exhausted but happier than she had been in months.

I was sitting in the kitchen, sipping decaf tea, when I heard the sharp sound of glass shattering near the back patio door.

My heart plummeted into my stomach.

I stood up instantly, my hand instinctively dropping to cover my pregnant abdomen. I backed away from the kitchen counter, picking up a heavy stainless-steel chef's knife from the block.

Footsteps heavy and uncoordinated rushed through the dining room.

I stepped into the hallway, knife raised—and froze.

It was my sister, Rachel.

Her eyes were bloodshot, her hair unwashed and tangled, her clothes rumpled. She looked completely unhinged. In her right hand, she held a heavy iron fireplace poker she had grabbed from our patio set outside.

"Rachel?!" I gasped, my blood running cold. "Have you lost your mind?!"

"You ruined my life!" Rachel screamed, her voice cracking hysterically as she took a violent step toward me, brandishing the iron poker. "You took my house! You took my money! Everyone looks at me like I'm a monster!"

"Get out of my house right now!" I yelled, keeping the knife pointed straight at her. "I'm calling the police!"

"Call them!" Rachel shrieked, tears streaming down her dirty cheeks. "I don't care anymore! I have nothing left! You gave everything to that stupid orphan bitch, and you left me with nothing!"

Upstairs, the sound of a bedroom door opening echoed through the hallway.

"Mommy?" Leah’s small voice called down from the top of the stairs. "What's that noise?"

Rachel turned her head toward the staircase, a terrifying, manic look taking over her face. "There she is," Rachel hissed, stepping toward the stairs. "The little leech who stole my life."
