Chapter 4 - The Arrest and the Media Storm

At 2:00 PM that afternoon, Detective Reyes and four armed police officers executed an arrest warrant at my parents' gated suburban home in the affluent neighborhood of Oakridge.

David and I watched the live coverage from a local news helicopter while sitting inside David’s law office. My father’s bankruptcy and local real estate prominence had already drawn local reporters, but the news of a high-society murder attempt spread like wildfire across social media.

The television screen showed two police cruisers pulled up along the manicured driveway. Moments later, the front doors burst open.

Richard Pierce was led out in handcuffs, wearing a wrinkled designer shirt. His head was held high, his expression thunderous as he yelled at the news cameras gathered at the perimeter gate.

"This is a witch hunt!" Richard shouted, his voice picked up by the news crew's boom mics. "My daughter is a mentally unstable liar! This is a corporate hit job!"

Behind him came Evelyn, sobbing hysterically into a silk scarf, her hands cuffed behind her back as an officer guided her into the back of a second police car.

"Local business tycoon Richard Pierce and his wife Evelyn have been formally charged with Attempted Murder, Conspiracy, and Insurance Fraud," the news anchor announced over the broadcast. "Police sources confirm that video surveillance from Rosemont Grill directly contradicts the couple's claims, showing a deliberate attempt to poison their estranged daughter, Clara Pierce."

My phone began ringing incessantly. Texts, voicemails, and social media notifications flooded my screen from extended family members, former college friends, and neighbors who had spent the last three years ignoring me because of the lies my parents had spread.

One text pinged from my aunt Sarah—Evelyn’s sister, who had called me "ungrateful" three years ago when I cut ties.

Clara, oh my god, I am so sorry! We had no idea! Richard told us you were sick and refusing help! Please call me!

I stared at the screen, a surge of righteous anger burning in my chest. I opened the message, typed four words, and hit send:

You chose to believe them.

Then I blocked her number.

David set a glass of water down in front of me. "The arraignment hearing is set for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. Richard’s high-priced defense attorney, Marcus Vance—no relation to your doctor—is going to push hard for bail."

"Can they get out?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly.

"Not if I have anything to say about it," David replied, pulling up his tablet. "I’m filing an emergency petition to freeze all of Richard’s remaining corporate assets, as well as the $2.5 million insurance policy. If he can't access his funds, he can't post bail."

"What about Mom?" I asked. "Is she going to turn on him?"

David leaned back in his leather chair, a calculating look in his eyes. "Evelyn is a coward, Clara. She relies on Richard for everything—her lifestyle, her status, her identity. But faced with twenty years in state prison? She will break. The moment her attorney realizes the video evidence is ironclad, they will try to offer her a plea deal to testify against Richard."

"I don't want her to get a plea deal," I said firmly, looking David dead in the eye. "She held the vial, David. She swapped the pills. She looked me in the eye at that dinner table and smiled while I was suffocating. I want them both to face the maximum sentence."

David nodded slowly, a dark, protective smile touching his lips. "Then that’s exactly what we’re going to give them."
