Chapter 5 - The Arraignment Hearing

The county courthouse was packed with reporters, observers, and legal teams the following morning. The air inside Courtroom 4A was heavy with tension, the chatter of the gallery dropping to an absolute hush as the bailiff brought in the defendants.

Richard and Evelyn entered in orange county jail jumpsuits, their wrists chained to their waists. Richard’s posture remained combative, his jaw set, while Evelyn kept her head bowed, her eyes red and puffy from a night in a holding cell.

I sat on the prosecution side of the gallery, flanked by David and Detective Reyes. When Richard took his seat at the defense table, his eyes scanned the room until they landed directly on me.

For a second, he stared at me with pure, unadulterated coldness—a glare meant to intimidate me into submission, the same glare he had used throughout my childhood whenever I dared to step out of line.

I didn't look down. I didn't flinch. I stared right back at him, holding his gaze until he was forced to turn away toward his lawyer.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Arthur Vance," the bailiff called out.

Judge Vance—the older brother of the emergency room doctor who had saved my life—took his place behind the bench. He adjusted his glasses, scanning the thick file before him with an expression of profound gravity.

"We are here today for the arraignment of Richard Pierce and Evelyn Pierce," Judge Vance began, his voice echoing authoritatively. "The charges before this court are Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Controlled Substance, and Insurance Fraud."

Marcus Vance, Richard's defense attorney, immediately stood up. "Your Honor, my clients enter a plea of Not Guilty to all charges. We request that bail be set at a reasonable amount. Mr. Pierce is a pillar of the business community, and Mrs. Pierce has no prior criminal record. They are neither flight risks nor a danger to the community."

"Pillar of the community?" the state prosecutor, Assistant DA Karen Miller, cut in, standing up smoothly. "Your Honor, the defendants deliberately attempted to murder their own daughter to collect a fraudulently obtained $2.5 million life insurance policy to cover their personal bankruptcy debts. We have crystal-clear 4K video footage of Mrs. Pierce swapping the victim’s medication and Mr. Pierce placing the poisoned bottle in front of her."

ADA Miller pulled up a document. "Furthermore, financial records show that two days before the dinner at Rosemont Grill, Mr. Pierce purchased two one-way plane tickets to Dubai under assumed names, scheduled to depart forty-eight hours after the dinner."

A loud gasp echoed across the courtroom gallery.

Richard snapped his head toward his lawyer, whispering frantically, but Marcus Vance looked visibly stunned, clearly unaware of the flight reservations.

Judge Vance’s face turned stern. He slammed his gavel down. "Flight tickets to a non-extradition country while planning a life insurance collection? That is the definition of a flight risk."

"Your Honor!" Marcus Vance pleaded. "Mrs. Pierce had no knowledge of those tickets!"

Evelyn's head snapped up, her eyes wide with sudden terror as she stared at her husband. "Richard? What plane tickets? You said we were going to Florida!"

"Silence at the defense table!" Judge Vance commanded.

Evelyn began to hyperventilate right there at the table. "You lied to me! You told me we were just getting the insurance money to pay off the mortgage!"

"Evelyn, shut your mouth!" Richard spat at her through gritted teeth, his composure cracking entirely.

"Order in the court!" Judge Vance slammed the gavel down repeatedly. "Bail is hereby DENIED for both defendants. Remand them to the county correctional facility pending trial."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort them out, Evelyn lost all control, sobbing violently and shoving Richard’s arm away. "He made me do it! It was all Richard's idea! He forged the papers!"

"Take them down!" Judge Vance ordered.

I watched as my parents were dragged through the heavy security doors, screaming at each other, their walls of perfection and control crumbling into absolute chaos.

David turned to me, placing a supportive arm around my shoulders. "It's starting, Clara. They are turning on each other."
