Chapter 9 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than three hours—a extraordinarily short time for a complex felony trial.

At 4:30 PM on Friday afternoon, the court was re-convened to hear the verdict. The air in Courtroom 4A was so thick with anticipation you could hear a pin drop on the carpet.

Richard stood at his table, clutching the edge of the wood, his face drained of all color. Evelyn stood beside her attorney, shaking uncontrollably, her eyes wide with terror.

I sat beside David and Luis, holding my breath.

"Has the jury reached a verdict?" Judge Vance asked.

"We have, Your Honor," the jury foreperson, a stern-looking woman in her fifties, announced. She handed an envelope to the bailiff, who passed it up to the judge.

Judge Vance opened the document, reviewed it briefly, and looked down at the defendants.

"Will the defendants please stand."

Richard and Evelyn stood up straight.

"On Count One: Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder," the foreperson read aloud, her voice clear and firm. "We find the defendant, Richard Pierce, GUILTY."

A sharp gasp echoed through the gallery. Richard’s knees buckled slightly, but his attorney caught his arm.

"On Count One: Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder," the foreperson continued, "We find the defendant, Evelyn Pierce, GUILTY."

Evelyn let out a high-pitched, agonizing shriek, collapsing onto her chair and burying her face in her hands.

"On Count Two: Conspiracy to Commit Murder, we find both defendants GUILTY." "On Count Three: Aggravated Assault with a Controlled Substance, we find both defendants GUILTY." "On Count Four: Insurance Fraud, we find both defendants GUILTY."

Guilty. On every single count.

Judge Vance slammed his gavel down, his face stern and unforgiving. "The defendants are remanded into custody without bail to await sentencing. Court is adjourned."

The gallery burst into hushed chatter as bailiffs immediately stepped forward, pulling Richard’s arms behind his back to slap silver handcuffs onto his wrists.

As Richard was turned around toward the holding doors, he looked at me one last time. But there was no anger left in his eyes—only the hollow, terrifying realization that he had lost everything. His wealth, his status, his freedom, and his family were gone forever.

Evelyn was practically carried out by two officers, weeping hysterically, her pleas falling on deaf ears.

I stood up slowly. Luis wrapped his broad arms around me in a tight, celebratory hug, while David beamed with immense pride.

"You did it, Clara," David said, his eyes shining. "It's over."

Outside the courthouse, dozens of reporters swarmed the steps as we walked out into the warm afternoon sun. Microphones were thrust into my face, questions shouted from every direction.

I stopped at the top of the marble steps, looking out over the crowd of cameras and journalists. I pulled the microphone close.

"For three years, I believed that staying silent was the only way to protect myself," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the bank of microphones. "I let people who were supposed to love me dictate who I was. But silence doesn't protect you from abuse. Truth does. Today, the truth won."

I walked down the steps, leaving the reporters behind, stepping out into a bright, unburdened future.
