Chapter 3 - The Gala Interruption

The Vance estate in Southwest Reno was ablaze with light. Valet parkers were moving luxury sports cars up and down the long, winding driveway. Elegant jazz music drifted through the massive french doors of the backyard patio, where over a hundred of Reno’s elite were sipping champagne.
I sat in the passenger seat of Detective Vance’s unmarked SUV, dressed in my full Air Force dress blues. The medals on my chest—the Bronze Star, the Commendation Medal—clinked softly as I adjusted my uniform jacket. If my parents wanted to play a game of status and image, I was going to show them what true honor looked like.
Behind us were four standard marked police cruisers and a transport van.
"All units, move in," Detective Vance announced into his radio.
The convoy surged up the driveway, tires crunching loudly on the gravel, completely disrupting the serene atmosphere of the gala. Guests gasped and stepped aside as a dozen armed police officers poured out of the vehicles, moving with practiced discipline toward the front entrance.
I stepped out of the SUV, my military boots striking the pavement with deliberate, rhythmic clicks. I walked right beside Detective Vance as he knocked heavily on the massive oak double doors.
The door swung open, revealing my father, Richard Vance. He was wearing a tailored tuxedo, holding a glass of scotch. When he saw the police, his face hardened into an expression of practiced, aristocratic indignation.
"What is the meaning of this? I am hosting a private charity event—"
His voice died in his throat as his eyes drifted past the detective and landed squarely on me. His face went entirely pale, the glass of scotch slipping from his fingers and shattering on the marble floor.
"Avery?" he whispered, his voice trembling. "You're... how are you here?"
"Good evening, Dad," I said, my voice echoing through the grand foyer. "The desert wasn't quite cold enough."
Before he could react, my mother appeared from the living room, a false smile plastered on her face. "Richard, darling, what is the noise—" She froze, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she saw me standing there, pristine and unbroken in my military uniform.
"Richard Vance, Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for felony child abuse, conspiracy, reckless endangerment, and grand larceny," Detective Vance announced, pulling out a pair of silver handcuffs.

"This is a mistake!" Eleanor shrieked, her perfect composure shattering instantly. "She's insane! She attacked us! We left her for her own safety!"
"Save it for the judge, Mrs. Vance," Detective Vance said, grabbing her manicured wrists and clicking the cuffs into place. "We have the highway camera footage. We watched you smile while your grandson froze."
