Chapter 8 - The Trial of Richard and Eleanor Vance

The trial lasted exactly four days. The prosecution's case was so overwhelming that it felt less like a legal battle and more like an execution of my parents' public lives.

The highlight of the trial was the playing of the highway camera footage. The courtroom was dead silent as the massive projector screen showed the silver truck stopping, my father throwing Eli's dinosaur blanket into the dirt, and my mother smiling as they drove away. Several members of the jury were visibly weeping.

I took the stand on the third day. Dressed in my uniform, I spoke with absolute clarity, recounting every detail of that night—the cold air, the fear in my son’s eyes, the total lack of empathy from the people who were supposed to protect me.

"Captain Vance," the prosecutor asked, "what did you do when you realized you had been abandoned?"

"I utilized my military SERE—Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape—training," I testified, looking directly at the jury. "I secured my son, assessed our environmental threats, identified a surveillance asset to preserve evidence, and waited for a safe opportunity to signal for extraction. My parents intended for us to disappear. But they underestimated the discipline of the United States military."

When Pendelton stood up to cross-examine me, he looked at the jury, looked at me, and sighed. He realized that any attempt to attack my character would completely backfire.

"No questions, Your Honor," he said quietly.

The defense didn't even call Richard or Eleanor to the stand. Doing so would have allowed the prosecution to tear them to pieces regarding their financial crimes and their long history of psychological abuse toward me.

In his closing argument, the prosecutor pointed directly at the defense table. "This wasn't a crime of passion. This was a cold, calculated, attempted execution by abandonment. They left a child to freeze. They deserve no mercy."

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
