Chapter 4 - The Public Fall

The arrest was a circus, exactly as I intended. As Richard and Eleanor were led down their front steps in handcuffs, their wealthy neighbors and country club associates stared in absolute horror. Cell phone cameras were flashing everywhere. The news of the wealthy Vance couple abandoning their military daughter and six-year-old grandson in the middle of a freezing desert spread through the crowd like wildfire.

"Avery, stop this!" Richard yelled as he was shoved toward the back of a police cruiser. "Think of the family name! Think of your inheritance!"

"The family name died the moment you left my son without his medicine," I said, standing tall under the bright floodlights. "And as for your money? I don't want a single dime of it. I'm going to watch the state take everything you own to pay for your legal defense, and you'll still end up in a concrete cell."

Eleanor was sobbing hysterically, her perfect hair finally falling into her face as she was forced into the transport van. "You ungrateful bitch! We gave you everything!"

"You gave me nothing but an understanding of how to survive enemies," I replied.

The doors slammed shut, and the police cruisers drove away, their sirens echoing through the wealthy neighborhood. The remaining guests looked at me with a mixture of awe and profound embarrassment. None of them dared to speak to me.

I turned back to Detective Vance. "What happens next?"

"Tomorrow morning is the arraignment," Vance said, wiping his brow. "Their high-priced lawyer, Pendelton, is going to try to get them out on bail. With their money, a judge might set a high cash bond, and they could be out by noon."

"Not if I can help it," I said. "I’m calling the Judge Advocate General’s office at my base. Because Eli is a military dependent and I am an active-duty officer on official leave when this happened, the military legal system is going to get involved. If my parents think this is just a local Nevada state issue, they are sorely mistaken."

I drove back to the station to pick up Eli. When he saw me, he ran into my arms, hugging me tightly around the neck. "Mommy, are we safe now?"

"We are completely safe, Eli," I whispered, burying my face in his hair. "The bad guys are in jail, and they're never coming back."
