Chapter 7 - The Split-Second Play

In the world of special operations, we call it the "OODA loop"—Observe, Orient, Decide, Act. It’s a cognitive process that allows an operator to react faster than an opponent can process information.

As Chloe’s eyes flickered toward the document, I lunged forward.

My hand slammed onto her wrist through the leather bag, pinning her fingers against the detonator. With my other hand, I grabbed Valerie’s arm and pulled her behind me, using my own body as a shield.

"Run, Val!" I roared.

The library erupted into chaos. Patrons screamed, knocking over chairs and books as they rushed for the exits.

Chloe struggled against my grip, her face contorting with a feral, terrifying rage. "You bastard! I’ll kill you! I’ll blow us all to hell!"

She managed to pull her hand free from the bag, revealing a small, black transmitter with a red button. Her thumb hovered over the trigger.

Before she could press it, a sharp, deafening crack echoed through the marble hall.

The glass window behind her shattered in a shower of glittering shards. A precision non-lethal kinetic round, fired by a federal sniper from the building across the street, struck Chloe’s wrist.

The impact shattered the bones in her hand, sending the transmitter flying across the polished marble floor.

Chloe screamed, a high, agonizing sound, as she collapsed onto the table, clutching her ruined wrist.

Federal agents swarmed the room, their weapons drawn, their voices a deafening chorus of authority. "Federal agents! Stay down! Stay down!"

Marcus Vance was the first to reach us, his weapon lowered, his eyes scanning the room. He picked up the transmitter from the floor, immediately flipping the safety switch. "We’ve got the trigger. Bomb squad, disarm the vehicle. The threat is neutralized."

I knelt on the floor, holding Valerie tightly against my chest. She was shaking, her tears soaking through my shirt, but she was alive. She was safe.

"I’ve got you, sweetheart," I whispered, my own eyes stinging with tears of relief. "I’ve got you. It’s over."

Chloe was dragged from the table, her face smeared with tears and blood from the shattered glass. As the agents secured her wrists in heavy steel cuffs, she looked at me with an expression of pure, unadulterated venom.

"This isn't over, Daniel!" she shrieked as they led her away. "I’ll find a way! I’ll always find a way!"

"No, Chloe," I said, my voice cold and absolute as I watched her disappear down the grand marble staircase. "You’re going to a place where the sun never rises. And you are never, ever coming back."
