Chapter 3 - The Cold War

The following week was a blur of legal nightmares and psychological repair. My brother had moved quickly; the evidence was undeniable. Claire was served with an emergency restraining order and an arrest warrant for child abuse. The gated community that had once been her kingdom now became a graveyard for her reputation as the "perfect" socialite.

Valerie began to heal, though the scars of her service were deep. We spent our nights in the living room with the lights dimmed, playing board games, her hand always gripping mine as if she feared I would vanish. Mateo, finally fed and rested, began to regain the weight he had lost.

But Claire was not a woman who went quietly into the night. She hired a firm of high-priced, shark-like attorneys who specialized in "family law destruction." They filed countersuits, claiming I had kidnapped the children and was abusing them, using my military background as a weapon to suggest I was prone to violent outbursts.

"It’s going to be a long fight," my brother warned me as we sat in my kitchen, reviewing the latest pile of legal threats. "She’s got money, and she’s got a narrative. The judge is old-school; he’s seen a hundred divorces where the father pulls the 'concerned parent' act."

"She isn't just trying to win custody," I said, watching Valerie sleep on the couch. "She’s trying to punish me for seeing her for what she is."

"Then we have to make sure the court sees it, too," he replied. "We have the footage. We have the medical reports on Valerie’s bruising. But we need a witness—someone who knows her true nature. Someone from the country club. Someone who saw her when she thought nobody was watching."

I looked at the files. There was one name that kept popping up in her emails: Sarah, the nanny who had 'quit' a month ago.

"Find her," I said. "Find Sarah."
