Chapter 7 - The Long Road Back

The months following the trial were dedicated to healing. We moved away from the gated neighborhood, finding a house in a quiet, forested area near the mountains where Valerie could run, climb trees, and be a seven-year-old without the fear of a "perfect" house haunting her.

Valerie’s nightmares slowly began to fade. We attended therapy together, building a language of trust. She began to understand that she didn't have to be the adult in the room—that she could let go of the weight of the world and just be a child.

Mateo grew into a curious, active boy, his laughter filling the house, a sound that had been absent for so long. We became a team—a family of three, bound by the trauma we had survived and the love that had rebuilt us.

I kept my promise to them. I was there for every scraped knee, every school play, and every difficult night. I learned that the battlefield isn't always a place you go to—sometimes, it’s the place you have to clear so that something beautiful can finally grow.
