Chapter 1 - The Force Behind the Badge

The heavy iron pry bar in Sienna’s hand caught the dim hallway light, gleaming with an ugly, menacing promise. Through the camera feed on my laptop, I could see the sweat beading along her hairline. She wasn't shaking from fear; she was shaking from adrenaline—the ugly rush of someone who felt entirely justified in committing a crime.
“Sienna, stop!” I screamed at my screen, though I knew it was useless.
My mother’s voice crackled through the phone speaker, metallic and cold. “Hurry up, Sienna. If Clara tries to call the cops, we’ll tell them she’s unstable. We’re family. The police always take family matters lightly when property disputes are involved.”
They genuinely believed that. They believed that blood was a get-out-of-jail-free card, a legal immunity blanket that could nullify deeds, keys, locks, and boundaries.
Sienna positioned the tip of the pry bar against the seam of the matte-black biometric security unit.
“Just a little leverage,” Sienna muttered to herself, her eyes locked on the heavy metal housing. “She probably just used a cheap lock box inside this thing. Dad, didn't you say Clara was always stingy with her cash?”
“She hoards it,” my father’s voice suddenly joined the call, rumbling through the speaker like distant thunder. “Take everything, Sienna. Every penny. It’s what she owes your mother for raising her.”
I watched in absolute horror as Sienna threw her body weight behind the tool.
The metal groaned.
A high-pitched mechanical chirp suddenly echoed from the unit.
It wasn't the sound of a cheap lockbox breaking. It was an alarm.
On the screen, the green status light on the biometric unit instantly flashed a violent, piercing crimson.
Sienna froze. Her hands slipped from the pry bar.
“What was that?” Mom asked, her voice suddenly losing its cocky edge.
Before Sienna could answer, the entire apartment’s smart-lighting system flickered from warm recessed white to a harsh, blinding emergency crimson. Across the room, the security monitors blinked off, replaced by a single flashing warning icon:
SECURITY BREACH: LEVEL 4 RESTRICTED ACCESS.FEDERAL PROPERTY CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL ENGAGED.LOCATION: ARLINGTON, VA.AUTHORIZATION: U.S. MARSHAL SERVICE.
Sienna staggered back, dropping the pry bar with a loud clatter against the hardwood floor. Her face drained of all color.
“Federal… what?” Sienna whispered, staring at the flashing red monitor.
Then, my phone buzzed in London. It wasn't a text message.
