Chapter 9 - The Unbreakable Bond

By the following spring, our lives had settled into a rhythm of profound peace and quiet joy.
Julian’s work as a Deputy U.S. Marshal remained demanding, but whenever he returned home from a grueling field operation, he didn't retreat into silence—he came straight to me, finding sanctuary in the warmth and stability we had built together.
We hosted a small, intimate dinner party at the penthouse to celebrate my promotion to Vice President of North American Operations. The guest list was carefully curated: my closest colleagues from the D.C. office, a few trusted federal colleagues of Julian’s who could tell incredible stories without breaking clearance protocols, and nobody who shared my DNA.
As I stood on the balcony overlooking the Potomac River, holding a glass of champagne while the evening breeze fluttered the hem of my dress, Julian walked up beside me, handing me a small, wrapped velvet box.
“What’s this?” I asked, raising an eyebrow playfully. “Another federal security audit?”
“Open it and see,” Julian smiled.
I untied the silver ribbon and lifted the lid.
Inside rested a stunning, custom-designed platinum ring featuring a brilliant sapphire flanked by delicate diamonds—the exact colors of the deep winter night when everything had changed.
“Clara,” Julian said, his voice dropping into that deep, steady register that always made my heart skip a beat. “You’ve spent your entire life building walls to protect your independence. But I don't want you to ever have to guard your home alone again. Marry me.”

Tears of pure happiness welled in my eyes. I didn't hesitate for a single second.
“Yes,” I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck as the city lights twinkled across the river below us.
