Chapter 8 - The Clearing of the Slate

The months following the trial were a quiet, beautiful period of healing.

With the help of Sarah Jenkins and the federal victim restitution program, the fraudulent mortgages on Claire’s name were completely wiped from her record. The family business, Vale Cleaners, was seized by the government and liquidated, with the proceeds transferred into a protected educational trust fund for Ava.

Claire sold her old, battered Honda Civic to a local scrap yard. She didn't want to look at the car that had nearly become her coffin ever again.

Instead, she purchased a reliable, safe blue SUV—a vehicle with pristine brakes and enough room for all of their suitcases.

They decided to leave Ohio forever.

They packed their lives into the back of the SUV, leaving behind the dark hills of Blackwood and the memories of Pine Hollow Road. They drove west, through the flat, open plains of Indiana, across the roaring Mississippi River, and toward the majestic, snow-capped peaks of Colorado.

They had purchased a small, sun-drenched cottage in the foothills of Boulder, a place where the air was clean and the mountains rose like protective giants against the blue sky.

“It’s so beautiful, Mom,” Ava said, leaning her head out of the window as they turned onto their new street. The air smelled of fresh pine and crisp, mountain snow.

“It’s home, baby,” Claire said, her hand resting on her daughter’s knee. “Our real home.”

The cottage was perfect. It had a wraparound porch, a small garden where Claire could grow her own herbs, and a large bedroom for Ava with a window that looked out over the continental divide.

For the first time in her life, Claire did not lock the back door with a heavy steel bar. She locked it with a simple, quiet turn of the key.

They were safe.
