Chapter 9 - The Garden in the Hills

One year later, the garden behind the Boulder cottage was in full bloom.

Claire stood among the rows of lavender and rosemary, her hands covered in rich, dark soil. She was wearing a simple denim apron, her hair tied back in a messy bun, a warm, genuine smile on her face.

She had started a small business—an artisanal apothecary shop in downtown Boulder, selling organic soaps, essential oils, and herbal remedies. It was a business she had built with her own hands, funded by her own hard work and the restitution from the Vale estate.

Ava walked out onto the porch, holding a camera. She was thirteen now, taller, with a bright, confident laugh that no longer carried the shadow of fear. She had joined the middle school track team and had recently won her first medal in the high jump.

“Smile, Mom!” Ava called out, raising the lens.

The photo captured Claire in the golden afternoon light, her eyes bright and filled with a profound, unshakeable peace.

“What are you doing today, sweetie?” Claire asked, wiping her forehead with her sleeve.

“I’m meeting Sarah at the library,” Ava said, referring to her new best friend from school. “We’re working on our science project about the geology of the Rockies.”

“Have fun,” Claire smiled. “Be back by six for dinner. I’m making your favorite—homemade lasagna.”

“I’ll be there!” Ava waved, running down the gravel path toward her bicycle, her sneakers clicking happily against the stone steps.

Claire watched her go, her heart filled with a gratitude so deep it made her throat tight. Three years ago, she had been a prisoner in her own life, trapped by the monsters who had claimed to love her. But she had fought. She had documented. She had survived.

She walked inside the cottage, washing the soil from her hands in the warm water of the kitchen sink.

On the refrigerator, held by a small magnetic clip, was a postcard from Detective Owens. He had recently retired from the Blackwood Police Department and was now living in Florida, spending his days fishing in the Gulf. The card read: “The sun is warm, Claire. And the water is clear. You did it.”

“We did it, Sean,” Claire whispered to the empty room.
