Chapter 10 - The New Dawn

The Thanksgiving dinner at the Boulder cottage was a small, intimate affair.

The table was set for three. Claire had invited Sarah Jenkins, who had become a close friend and her permanent legal advisor, to join them for the holiday.

The room was filled with the warm, rich scent of roasting turkey, fresh sage, and sweet pumpkin pie.

Claire stood at the head of the table, holding a glass of white wine.

“I’d like to make a toast,” Claire said, looking at the two people who had helped her build this new life.

Ava and Sarah fell silent, their eyes turning toward her with a deep, quiet affection.

“Four years ago today, I was standing in a wet driveway, looking at a severed brake line and a family that wanted to destroy me,” Claire began, her voice steady and filled with a profound emotion. “I thought that would be the end of my story. But I discovered that when you fight for your child, and when you fight for your own truth, the universe will stand by you. I found a daughter who is braver than I ever could have hoped, a friend who fought for us in the halls of justice, and a life that is beautiful, free, and entirely our own.”

She raised her glass higher, her eyes locking onto Ava’s.

“To the survivors. To the mountains. And to our family—the real one.”

“To family!” Ava and Sarah cheered, their glasses clinking together in a warm, beautiful harmony of joy.

As the dinner began, Ava took a large bite of her turkey, her face glowing in the warm candlelight.

“Hey, Mom,” Ava said with a wide, bright smile. “Do you know what today is?”

Claire smiled, leaning over and kissing her daughter’s temple.

“It’s the first day of the rest of our lives, baby,” Claire said.

The nightmare was over. The karma had been delivered, and the healing had begun. In the warmth of their new home, surrounded by the love they had fought so hard to protect, they were finally, truly whole.
