Chapter 3 - The Gaslighting Attempt

By noon, my phone had accumulated forty-seven missed calls from Ryan and over twenty frantic texts from his mother, Eleanor.
I returned to the house I shared with Ryan only to collect my essential documents and personal belongings. As I pulled into the driveway, I saw Ryan’s car parked crookedly near the garage. He had been waiting for me.
The moment I unlocked the front door, he rushed into the foyer, his hair disheveled and eyes bloodshot.
“Clara! Thank God,” he pleaded, reaching out to touch my arm. I stepped back sharply, out of his reach. “Look, I’m sorry about last night. I was caught in the middle. You know how my family is—they have weird humor, but they didn't mean to hurt your parents!”
I looked at him, marveling at how I had spent six years married to a man whose entire existence was built on deception.
“Save it, Ryan,” I said softly.
“Clara, please!” he begged, following me into the study. “Megan wants to apologize. She feels terrible! My parents want to invite your family to dinner next weekend to make it up to them.”
“Is that before or after they move into the Florida beach house my inheritance paid for?”
Ryan froze. The color drained from his skin, leaving him ghostly white. He swallowed hard, struggling to find words. “What... what did you say?”
“Apex Horizons LLC,” I stated, sitting behind the desk and opening a folder. “Six hundred thousand dollars, Ryan. Forged mortgage papers on my father’s commercial building. Did you really think I wouldn't find out?”
“Clara, I can explain—”
“No, you can’t,” I interrupted. “You traded my life, my inheritance, and my parents’ security to buy love and status from a family that treats you like a footstool and my family like trash.”
“It was an investment!” Ryan suddenly shouted, his cowardly posture shifting into defensive rage. “My brother needed a break! Megan’s business was struggling! You have plenty of money, Clara! Your family is rich! Why couldn't you share?”
“Because you stole it!” I snapped, standing up and slamming my hands on the desk. “And you didn't just share—you embezzled, you committed forgery, and you humiliated my parents while doing it!”

I reached into my bag, pulled out a thick envelope, and tossed it onto the desk between us.
“That is the emergency asset freeze order and the initial divorce petition. Pack your bags, Ryan. You have one hour to leave my house.”
