Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Miller

The fallout from the gala was swift and devastating for the Miller family.
Within forty-eight hours, the court approved the complete freeze of all bank accounts associated with Apex Horizons, Ryan, Megan, and her husband. The luxury Florida property was placed under a judicial lien, preventing any sale or transfer.
Devoid of money to pay for high-end criminal defense lawyers, the internal cracks within the Miller family erupted into open warfare.
Megan accused Ryan of being a coward who threw her under the bus. Ryan accused his parents of pressuring him to steal from me in the first place to bail out his father’s failing construction business. In their desperation, they turned on each other, providing sworn statements to the police that incriminated one another in a frantic attempt to secure plea deals.
I sat in Marcus’s office a week later, reviewing the legal disclosures.
“Megan’s husband has offered to testify against Ryan and his father in exchange for immunity,” Marcus reported, tossing a legal document onto the table. “And Ryan’s father is blaming Ryan for originating the forgery scheme.”
“They’re eating each other alive,” I remarked, feeling a complex mix of sadness and profound relief.
“They never had real loyalty, Clara,” my mother said softly, placing a warm hand on mine. “People who bond over cruel laughter and greed will always tear each other apart when the money runs out.”
My father nodded in agreement. “Justice is finally taking its course. But what about you, Clara? How are you holding up?”

I looked out the window at the city skyline. For years, I had felt small, constantly shrinking myself to fit into Ryan’s family, constantly apologizing for things I didn't do just to keep the peace.
“I’ve never felt lighter, Dad,” I said truthfully. “For the first time in years, I can breathe.”
