Chapter 2 - The Cracks in the Ledger

By the time the sun began to rise over the Cooper River, casting a pale orange glow across the marshlands, Emily had downloaded over four gigabytes of encrypted financial data.
Her eyes were bloodshot, her neck stiff, but the exhaustion was entirely eclipsed by the sheer scale of what she was looking at.
Vanessa hadn't just been managing the trust portfolios for the firm's wealthiest clients. She had been treating them as her personal line of credit.
The largest portfolio belonged to the Sinclair family—Grant’s family. The Sinclairs were old Charleston money, possessing vast tracts of real estate along the coast and a massive charitable foundation that funded historical preservation across the state. Grant’s father, Arthur Sinclair, had trusted Whitaker & Associates with his family's wealth for nearly three decades.
According to the ledger, over the last eighteen months, more than one point two million dollars had been transferred from the Sinclair Charitable Foundation into an account listed as VW Creative Consulting LLC.
There was no record of any consulting work ever being performed.
Instead, the withdrawals from the LLC coincided perfectly with the deposits made on Vanessa’s imported French lace wedding gown, the rental of the entire grand ballroom at the Mayfield Hotel, and the purchase of a five-hundred-thousand-dollar historic townhouse on Church Street that she and Grant had moved into just weeks before the ceremony.
"She stole from her own father-in-law to pay for her dream wedding," Emily murmured, leaning back in her chair.
But as she dug deeper, she realized the trail didn't stop with Vanessa.
Every single one of those transfers had been flag-approved by an administrator account belonging to her father, Richard.
Did Richard know his daughter was embezzling from their most important client? Or had he simply trusted Vanessa so blindly that he authorized her transactions without looking at the source of the funds?
The door to the bedroom creaked open, and Lily stepped out, rubbing her eyes. She was still wearing the blue cardigan over her pajamas.
"Mom? Are you still awake?"
Emily quickly closed her laptop and stood up, plastering a warm, reassuring smile on her face. "Yes, sweetie. I was just finishing up some work. Are you hungry? Let’s order some room service. Whatever you want. Even chocolate chip pancakes."
Lily’s face lit up, a tiny sliver of the bright, happy girl she had been before yesterday returning to her eyes. "With extra whipped cream?"
"With mountain of whipped cream," Emily promised, pulling her daughter into a tight hug.
As she held her child, Emily looked back at the closed laptop on the desk. The Whitakers had spent their entire lives treating Emily like the secondary daughter, the quiet one who didn't fit the polished social circle they craved. They had allowed Vanessa to walk all over her, to humiliate her, and finally, to physically strike her daughter.

They had built their house on a foundation of stolen money and social pretense.
And Emily was about to pull the first brick.
