Chapter 8 - The Reclamation of Savannah
Three months later, the liquidators had finished their work in Charleston.
The Mt. Pleasant mansion had been sold to pay the remaining legal fees and restitution. Patricia Whitaker was now living in a small, two-bedroom apartment in West Ashley, her life of luxury entirely gone. She spent her days visiting Richard, who wore an ankle monitor and was confined to his small living room, and writing letters to Vanessa that were rarely answered.
In Savannah, Emily’s life had blossomed into something beautiful and real.
Her forensic accounting firm had grown, taking on several major corporate clients who valued her absolute integrity and attention to detail.
She had bought a beautiful, historic home with a large garden filled with oak trees and Spanish moss, just blocks from the park.
Lily was thriving. Her grades were excellent, her laughter filled the house, and she had joined a local youth soccer team where she was the star midfielder. She no longer wore the pale blue cardigan; she wore a bright red jersey, her knees covered in dirt and her face bright with a confidence that no one could ever take away from her again.
"Mom! Look at this!" Lily yelled, kicking a soccer ball across the green lawn of their new backyard.
Emily laughed, sitting on the wooden porch with David Vance. "That’s a great kick, Lily! Keep your toe down!"
David smiled, wrapping an arm around Emily’s shoulders. "She’s getting fast. You’re going to have a hard time keeping up with her soon."
"I don't mind," Emily said, leaning her head against his shoulder. "As long as she’s running forward."
The front gate clicked open, and the mail carrier walked up the path, dropping a small stack of letters into the mailbox.
Emily stood up and walked over to retrieve them.
Most of them were bills and business correspondence, but at the bottom of the stack was a plain, white envelope with no return address.

Inside was a single, hand-written letter on lined yellow paper.
