Chapter 4 - The Denial of Patricia

Patricia Whitaker’s kitchen in Mt. Pleasant was usually a sanctuary of pristine white marble and freshly cut hydrangeas. But today, it looked like a war room.

Papers were scattered across the island, and the television was tuned to the local news channel, which was running a breaking story about the raid on Whitaker & Associates.

"It’s Emily," Patricia hissed, her phone pressed tightly to her ear as she paced the length of the kitchen. "Richard, I am telling you, it has to be her! She’s the only one who had the technical knowledge to access those legacy files, and she’s doing this out of spite because of that stupid incident at the wedding!"

"Patricia, be quiet!" Richard’s voice came through the speaker, sounding old and exhausted. He was sitting in a consultation room at his defense attorney’s office. "The state didn't get this information from a family grudge. They have bank records. They have the actual routing numbers from Nassau. Vanessa... Vanessa actually did it, Patricia."

"I don't care what she did!" Patricia cried, her voice cracking with desperation. "We are the Whitakers! We have a reputation to maintain! Do you know what people are saying at the country club? They’re asking if we’re going to be able to pay our dues! They’re asking if Vanessa is going to jail!"

"She might," Richard said quietly. "And if they prove I signed off on those transfers knowing they were fraudulent, I might go with her."

Patricia dropped her phone onto the counter, her face turning a sickly shade of gray.

She looked at the elegant silver-framed wedding photo of Vanessa and Grant that had been delivered just yesterday. Vanessa looked so beautiful, so perfect. How could this have happened?

She picked up her car keys and stormed out of the house.

An hour later, Patricia was standing on the porch of Emily’s small, historic cottage in Savannah, banging on the heavy wooden door.

"Emily! Open this door right now!"

The door opened, but it was not Emily who stood there. It was a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark suit—David Vance, Emily’s attorney and longtime friend.

"Mrs. Whitaker," David said, his voice calm and completely unyielding. "You are trespassing. If you do not leave this property immediately, I will have the Savannah Police Department remove you."

"Where is my daughter?" Patricia demanded, trying to push past him. "She has destroyed this family! She has ruined her sister’s marriage! I want to speak to her!"

"Your daughter is inside, protecting her child from the toxic environment you created," David said, stepping forward to completely block the doorway. "And as her legal representative, I am advising you that any further contact from you, your husband, or Vanessa will be met with an immediate filing for a civil restraining order. You have no rights here, Patricia. Not anymore."

Patricia stared at him, her lips trembling. "She’s my daughter."

"Then you should have treated her like one," David said, and shut the door in her face.
