Chapter 2 - The Uninvited Guests

The Reed family mansion was an imposing, six-thousand-square-foot brick estate located in the most exclusive gated neighborhood in the city. The long driveway was lined with snow-dusted pine trees adorned with twinkling white lights. Valet attendants in dark coats were parking luxury sedans along the circular driveway as I pulled my black SUV up to the grand front entrance.

Lily sat in the back seat, holding her favorite stuffed bear, watching the grand house with wide eyes.

"Mommy, that's Grandma and Grandpa's house," she said quietly. "Are we allowed to be here?"

"We own this house, Lily," I answered gently, shifting the car into park. "We are allowed to be anywhere we want."

I stepped out of the vehicle, walked around to unbuckle Lily, and helped her down. She held my hand tightly, her silver shoes crunching softly against the light dusting of snow on the brick walkway.

Inside the grand foyer, the air smelled of expensive pine garlands, roasted meats, and fine wine. Over fifty guests—local politicians, high-profile restaurant investors, food critics, and society friends—were gathered beneath the towering, two-story Christmas tree in the main hall.

Nathan was standing near the fireplace, holding a glass of vintage scotch, laughing at something Brooke said. Brooke was leaning against him, her manicured hand resting intimately on his chest. My mother-in-law, Eleanor, was proudly showing off her diamond necklace to a local journalist, boasting about her son's "unprecedented corporate expansion."

None of them noticed us at first.

I walked steadily down the grand marble steps into the lower reception hall, my chin held high, wearing a sleek black velvet coat over my clothes. Lily walked proudly beside me, holding her small clutch purse, her lavender skirt swaying.

A sudden, heavy hush fell over the room.

It started near the catering bar and spread like wildfire through the crowd. Whispers erupted. Guests turned, their eyes wide as they spotted me holding my six-year-old daughter’s hand.

Nathan turned to see what had caused the sudden silence. His smile instantly froze. The glass of scotch in his hand wobbled, liquid splashing slightly over the rim.

"Clara?" Nathan stammered, his face turning an unhealthy shade of pale. "What... what are you doing here?"
