Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Empire

Over the next three months, the dominoes fell with terrifying speed and precision.

Without access to corporate accounts, Nathan’s legal team was completely outmatched by Sarah Mitchell and my forensic auditing staff. The emergency injunction revealed a web of illegal transactions: Nathan had not only been funding Brooke’s lifestyle, but he had also been taking high-interest personal loans against corporate equity to keep his parents' lavish spending habits afloat.

When the full scope of the financial fraud was laid bare before the board of directors of Reed Dining Group, the vote was unanimous.

Nathan was formally stripped of his CEO title, removed from the board, and terminated for cause.

Because the company’s foundational capital originated from my personal family trust, and because I held fifty-one percent of the voting stock, the board appointed me as interim Chief Executive Officer and President.

On a cold Tuesday morning in February, I walked into the corporate headquarters of the company I had helped build. The glass-and-steel building downtown was silent as I stepped out of the private elevator onto the top floor.

Nathan was sitting in his former corner office, packing his personal belongings into two plain cardboard boxes under the watchful eye of Marcus and a security guard.

He looked completely broken. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his eyes were sunken, and he had lost weight. He was facing active criminal charges for corporate embezzlement and tax evasion—charges that would likely carry a three-to-five-year prison sentence unless he reached a full restitution agreement.

He looked up as I entered the room.

"Clara," he said softly, setting a framed photograph of Lily down into the box.

"Nathan," I replied, standing by the doorway with my hands folded inside the pockets of my tailored coat.

"Is this really what you wanted?" he asked, his voice filled with bitter regret. "To take everything? My company, my home, my reputation?"

"I didn't take anything from you, Nathan," I said calmly. "You gave it all away the moment you decided that loyalty, family, and truth were disposable. You built a house of cards on lies, and then you acted surprised when the wind blew it down."

"Brooke is gone," Nathan muttered, looking down at the carpet. "The moment the accounts were frozen, she cut deal with the prosecutor and blamed everything on me."

"Of course she did," I replied. "Parasites leave when the host runs out of blood. You traded a wife who built an empire with you for a woman who only wanted the crown."

He choked back a sob, wiping his eyes with his sleeve. "Can I see Lily?"

May you like

"You will see Lily under court-supervised visitation once you complete your mandatory anger management and addiction evaluation," I said firmly. "She deserves a father who is whole, truthful, and present—not a man who uses her as a pawn when it's convenient for his image."

I stepped back out of the office, allowing Marcus to escort him out of the building.
