Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Brooke immediately took a quick step back from Nathan, her eyes darting nervously around the room full of influential city figures. Eleanor Reed gasped loudly, clutching her pearl necklace as she marched toward us with a scowl.
"Clara!" Eleanor hissed in a low, furious whisper as she reached the bottom of the stairs. "What is the meaning of this dramatic entrance? Nathan specifically told you that this was an executive networking event! You are making a scene in front of our distinguished guests!"
I looked at my mother-in-law with cold amusement. "An executive networking event, Eleanor? Is that what you call a Christmas party where my husband brings his mistress and excludes his wife and daughter?"
Gasps echoed across the room. Several guests pulled out their phones.
Brooke’s face turned bright red. "Clara, please, you're wildly misunderstanding the situation—"
"Quiet, Brooke," I said, my voice calm, clear, and ringing across the high ceilings of the hall. "I am speaking to my husband."
Nathan stepped forward, his eyes burning with anger, trying to project authority. He grabbed my upper arm, leaning in close to whisper in my ear. "Are you insane? You're ruining everything! Get Lily out of here right now before you humiliate us further!"
"Don't put your hands on me, Nathan," I said softly, looking down at his grip.
Marcus, my private security escort who had quietly entered behind me through the front doors, stepped into view. Marcus was six-foot-four and built like a brick wall. He placed a heavy, gloved hand on Nathan’s shoulder and squeezed just enough to force Nathan to release me.
"Step back, sir," Marcus instructed deadpan.
Nathan stumbled back, glaring at Marcus, then at me. "Who the hell is this? Clara, have you lost your mind?!"
Before I could answer, a crisp knock sounded at the double front doors. Two uniformed county sheriffs stepped into the foyer, accompanied by a process server holding a thick leather accordion folder.
The process server scanned the room until his eyes landed on Nathan.
"Nathan Reed?" the server called out loudly.
May you like
Nathan blinked, terrified. "Yes?"
"You've been served," the man said, stepping forward and handing Nathan a legal dossier stamped with the red seal of the State Circuit Court. "Emergency financial injunction, corporate asset freeze, and formal petition for marriage dissolution filed by Mrs. Clara Reed."
