Chapter 2 - The Deck of Whispers

The guest stateroom Bill had managed to secure at the last minute was small, tucked away on Deck 3 near the ship’s engines. It lacked the private balcony and ocean views of Austin and Monica’s penthouse suite on Deck 10, but to Mia, it felt like a palace.

Bill sat on the edge of the lower bunk, watching Mia arrange four small foil-wrapped chocolates on the pristine white duvet.

"Grandpa?" she asked softly, looking up through her long fringe. "Are Mommy and Daddy going to jail?"

Bill paused, choosing his words with immense care. "I don't know yet, sweetheart. Right now, my only job is to make sure you are safe."

"Daddy looked really angry," she whispered, her fingers twisting the edge of her oversized shirt. "He told me before they left that if I made a sound or left the house, the police would come and take me away because I was a bad girl."

Bill felt a knot tighten in his throat. He leaned down, placing his large hands over her knees. "Your daddy lied to you, Mia. You didn't do anything bad. They did something terrible. You are the bravest girl I know for calling me."

A soft knock sounded at the stateroom door.

Bill stood up, motioning for Mia to stay on the bed. He pulled the door open a crack. Standing in the carpeted hallway was Chief Security Officer Marcus Vance, a tall, solid man with graying hair and a sharp navy-blue uniform. Beside him stood the ship’s assistant purser.

"Mr. Slater?" Chief Vance asked, his voice professional but measured. "May we have a word? Your son and daughter-in-law are currently at the main guest relations desk claiming you snatched their child."

"Come in, Officer," Bill said, stepping back and opening the door fully.

Chief Vance stepped into the small room. His eyes swept over Mia, taking in her small frame, the lingering shadows under her eyes, and the oversized airport T-shirt. Vance’s stern expression softened slightly.

Bill pulled out his leather wallet, extracted the folded yellow sticky note—now sealed inside a clear plastic sandwich bag he had begged from a galley worker—and handed it to the chief. He also slid his phone across the desk, displaying the timestamped call log from 2:03 AM and the photos he had taken of the barren kitchen counter in Austin’s house.

Chief Vance read the note once. Then he read it again. His face hardened.

"They left an eight-year-old alone in an empty house for a two-week cruise?" Vance asked, looking up from the plastic bag.

"I have the spare key they didn't know I kept," Bill said. "I have the security footage from my own porch camera showing me arriving at their home at 2:40 AM. I have the receipts from the diner where I fed her at four in the morning because she hadn't eaten since noon the previous day."

Chief Vance turned to the assistant purser. "Cancel Mr. Austin Slater’s request to restrict his father’s movement on this vessel. Place a security flag on their cabin. They are not to approach Deck 3 or contact this young lady under any circumstances."

"Understood, Chief," the assistant purser murmured, taking notes on a tablet.

Vance turned back to Bill, reaching into his pocket and pulling out an official card. "Mr. Slater, we dock in Nassau at eight tomorrow morning. Because this ship is registered in the Bahamas but departed from a U.S. port, I am required to notify both the Bahamian Maritime Authority and Child Protective Services in Florida. When we land, federal agents will be waiting at the pier."

Bill nodded slowly. "Good. That’s exactly what I want."

"Grandpa?" Mia’s voice piped up from the bed. She was holding one of the chocolates toward the tall security officer. "Do you want one? They’re free."

Chief Vance looked at the little girl, a genuine, warm smile breaking through his professional mask. He walked over, knelt down on one knee so he was at eye level with her, and gently took the chocolate.

"Thank you, little lady," Vance said softly. "You have the best grandfather in the world, you know that?"

Mia looked at Bill, her small eyes shining with tears. "I know," she whispered.
