Chapter 3 - The Nassau Standoff

By 7:30 the following morning, the turquoise waters of Nassau harbor appeared outside the stateroom porthole. The massive cruise ship glided toward the concrete pier where three black SUVs and two marked police cruisers were already parked under the palm trees.
Bill stood by the cabin door, wearing his jacket, holding Mia’s small hand. He had packed their tiny duffel bag hours ago.
Suddenly, the stateroom door shook violently as someone slammed a fist against the wood outside.
"Bill! Open this damn door!" Austin’s voice roared from the hallway. "Open it right now!"
Bill placed Mia behind him, opened the door, and stepped out into the corridor, shutting the door firmly behind his back.
Austin stood in the narrow hallway, his hair uncombed, wearing sweatpants and an unbuttoned shirt. Behind him stood Monica, her eyes red-rimmed, clutching a designer leather handbag like a shield.
"Have you lost your mind?!" Austin shouted, his face inches from Bill’s. "There are federal agents waiting at the gangway! The captain just put a hold on our passports! Do you have any idea what this is going to do to my career?!"
"Your career?" Bill scoffed, staring at his son with utter disdain. "You're worried about your accounting firm while your daughter is traumatized?"
"We left her for thirty-six hours, Bill! Not two weeks!" Monica shrieked, taking a step forward. "We had an agreement with a nanny! The nanny backed out at the last second, okay?! We couldn't refund the twenty thousand dollars! The cruise line refused to give us a credit! What were we supposed to do? Throw twenty grand in the trash?!"
Bill felt a wave of nausea sweep over him. "You traded your daughter's safety for twenty thousand dollars."
"She was fine!" Monica cried out, tears ruining her heavy makeup. "We left food! We left the iPad! We set the alarm system! She’s eight years old, Bill, not an infant! Kids in other countries stay home alone all the time!"
"You locked her in a house without a phone!" Bill roared, finally letting his restraint shatter. The sheer volume of his voice echoed down the long hallway, causing doors to crack open as curious passengers peeked out. "She had to hunt through an old drawer to find my business card from five years ago! She dialed my landline from a dead cell phone connected to a charger she barely managed to plug in!"
Austin grabbed Bill’s collar. "She’s MY daughter, Dad! You don't get to ruin my life over a mistake!"
Before Bill could react, two heavy hands slammed onto Austin’s shoulders.
Chief Vance and three tall ship security officers dragged Austin backward, shoving him against the wall of the corridor.
"Mr. Slater! Hands off!" Vance commanded sternly. "You were ordered to stay away from this cabin!"
"He's destroying my family!" Austin screamed, struggling against the security guards.
"You destroyed your family the second you signed the boarding manifest without your daughter’s name on it," Vance countered coldly. He turned to his officers. "Escort Mr. and Mrs. Slater to the ship's conference room. The FBI child exploitation task force and Bahamian authorities are coming aboard now."
Monica began to sob hysterically as the guards escorted her and a cursing Austin toward the elevators. Six-year-old Leo was left standing in the hallway, looking utterly confused, clutching a stuffed turtle.
Bill walked over to his grandson, kneeling down softly. "Leo, buddy," Bill said gently. "Go with the nice security lady. Everything is going to be okay."

Leo looked at Bill with wide, fearful eyes. "Is Mia mad at me?"
Bill’s heart broke into a thousand pieces. He pulled the little boy into a brief, tight hug. "Mia loves you, Leo. None of this is your fault. Remember that. None of this is your fault."
