Chapter 4 - Paper Trails and Cold Lies

The conference room on Deck 2 smelled of stale coffee and leather.
Sitting across a long oak table from Bill and Mia was Special Agent Sarah Jenkins of the FBI’s Crimes Against Children Division, along with a senior social worker from Florida’s Department of Children and Families named David Reyes.
On the table sat three items: Monica’s yellow sticky note, Bill’s phone, and a thick blue binder that Agent Jenkins had brought with her.
"Mr. Slater," Agent Jenkins said, her sharp blue eyes studying Bill carefully. "We’ve reviewed the initial statements from the ship’s security team and the physical evidence you provided. We also had a team enter your son’s home in Florida two hours ago under an emergency warrant."
Bill leaned forward, his hands resting on his knees. "What did they find?"
Agent Jenkins opened the blue binder, turning a page displaying high-resolution photographs of Austin’s pristine suburban house.
"The front door was double-deadbolted from the outside using a smart-lock system controlled via an app on your son’s phone," Jenkins explained coldly. "Even if Mia had wanted to leave, she was physically trapped inside. The house had no landline service. The Wi-Fi had been disabled remotely at midnight to prevent her from using streaming services or smart speakers to contact anyone."
Bill felt a cold chill run down his spine. "They locked her in... and turned off the internet?"
Social Worker David Reyes spoke up, his voice heavy with quiet outrage. "It gets worse, Mr. Slater. We pulled the home’s smart-thermostat logs. The air conditioning was set to eighty-five degrees to save electricity while they were away. If you hadn't arrived at three in the morning, that house would have reached dangerous temperatures by mid-afternoon today."
Mia, sitting beside Bill, was quietly coloring a drawing of a butterfly that Agent Jenkins had given her. She didn't seem to be listening, but Bill knew how sharp her ears were. He placed his large palm over her back, protecting her.
"What happens now?" Bill asked.
"Your son and his wife have been taken into federal custody under emergency charges of felony child desertion, child endangerment, and false imprisonment," Agent Jenkins stated plainly. "Their son, Leo, is currently under the care of Bahamian child welfare services until we can arrange transport back to the States."
"And Mia?" Bill asked, his voice trembling slightly. "Who gets Mia?"
David Reyes looked at Bill, his expression softening into genuine sympathy. "Normally, children in emergency custody situations are placed in a certified foster shelter until a formal fitness hearing can be held. However..." Reyes looked at the timestamped photos of Bill arriving at the house, the receipts, and the way Mia was currently leaning her small head against Bill’s arm. "...you acted as her primary savior. You have no criminal record, you own your home outright, and you showed extraordinary initiative."
"She stays with me," Bill said, his tone leaving zero room for negotiation. "I built my life on taking care of my family. I am not letting my granddaughter go to a shelter."

Agent Jenkins closed the binder with a firm snap. "I’m signing an emergency kinship placement order today, Mr. Slater. Mia goes home with you. But be prepared... when we get back to Florida, this is going to turn into a war. Austin’s defense lawyers will fight this with everything they have to avoid prison time."
"Let them fight," Bill said, looking down at his granddaughter's drawing. "They have money. But I have the truth."
