Chapter 2 - Justice in Handcuffs

Before David’s hand could reach my collar, two uniformed Boston police officers burst through the double mahogany doors of The Copper Lantern. The manager, finally finding his voice, pointed frantically toward our table.

"Officer! Right here!" the manager shouted.

"Step back! Keep your hands where we can see them!" the lead officer ordered, his hand resting firmly on his holster as he observed the flipped chair, Maya sobbing quietly while holding her torn hair, and David standing defensively over us.

"Officers, thank God you're here," Rebecca chimed in instantly, her voice dropping into a practiced, helpless pitch. She stood up, adjusting her expensive pearls. "This woman—my son's mother-in-law—has created a horrific scene. She suffers from severe mental instability and is making wild, defamatory threats against my son. Please remove her immediately."

The lead officer looked at me, then at Maya, who was trembling, her scalp red and inflamed where David had violently yanked her hair.

"Ma'am, are you alright?" the officer asked Maya directly, ignoring Rebecca entirely.

Maya looked up, her eyes wide with fear. For years, David had conditioned her to stay quiet, to cover for him, to take the blame. I held my breath, praying that my daughter would find the tiny spark of courage left inside her.

Maya looked at David, who was glaring at her with dark, promising eyes that threatened retribution later. Then she looked at me. She saw the fierce, unyielding love in my eyes.

"No," Maya said, her voice small at first, then growing firm. "I am not alright. My husband just grabbed me by my hair and dragged me across the floor. There are dozens of witnesses in this room."

"She’s lying!" David barked. "She fell! I was trying to catch her!"

"Lie?" a woman from the adjacent table suddenly shouted out. "We all saw it! You pulled her backward by her hair! His mother sat there and clapped!"

Murmurs of agreement rippled across the entire restaurant. Cellphones, which had been secretly recording the entire encounter under table edges, were now held high.

"Sir, put your hands behind your back," the lead officer said, stepping forward with handcuffs unclipped.

"Do you have any idea who I am?" David screamed, backing away. "My mother is Rebecca Vance! I am a senior partner at Vance & Sterling! You touch me and I'll have your badge!"

"I don't care if you're the mayor, sir. Hands behind your back. Now."

Within seconds, the officer grabbed David’s arms, forced him down onto the table, and snapped the heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. David thrashing and yelling obscenities only made the collar tighter.

Rebecca shrieked in horror. "Unchain my son this instant! You incompetent fools! I will sue the department! I will burn your careers to the ground!"

May you like

"Ma'am, if you interfere with a lawful arrest, you will be placed in custody for obstruction," the second officer warned sternly.

As David was dragged out of the five-star restaurant past whispering, disgusted millionaires and socialites, I picked up the manila envelope, held my daughter’s hand tightly, and walked out right behind them, leaving Rebecca standing alone amidst the ruins of her family's reputation.
